Biography: Gerald Nolen Haynie, ?Jerry? passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, March 4, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospital, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born May 4, 1938 at his parent?s home in Franklin, Tennessee to W.D. and Bernice Haynie. Jerry grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. At a young age, he was a Boy Scout, and also became an avid piano player. His love for music continued through his life. During his High School years, at Humes High School, he was in a musical band known as, ?The Three Jokers?. One night, his band performed on the same stage as Elvis Presley who attended the same high school. After High School, Jerry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he earned the distinguished rank of Sergeant (non-commissioned officer). After the Marines, he worked his way through college, and attended Memphis State University, where he excelled and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in only 3 years. Soon after college, he met Betty Faye Johnson, and they were married on May 23, 1964. This was the start of a relationship that lasted over 40 years and love that lasted to the end. Jerry and Betty were settling in Memphis, where he worked for a BBQ chain, Little Pigs of America. Later that year, he was contacted by a Kentucky business man, and later, Governor John Y. Brown, and his partner, Jack Massey, who just bought out a relatively obscure chain, founded by a little old man in Corbin, Kentucky, who had strange ideas of cooking chicken in a pressure cooker. (Colonel Harland Sanders). They took a big leap of faith, packed up and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Jerry was the first National Training Director at Kentucky Fried Chicken Corporation. After 3 years, they moved to Nashville and he became a Field Director with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC.) In the early days of KFC, he was offered the opportunity to buy KFC stock. He borrowed every penny he could get his hands on to buy the enterprising franchise. He desired to buy more KFC stock, but barely able to make the interest payment, he promised his wife, Betty, that he would buy her a washing machine because their first baby was on the way. In 1968, he had made enough money in the stock market to go into business. Because his wife, Betty, was a native of Conway, Arkansas, they decided to relocate and buy the KFC Franchise in North Little Rock, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Over the years he added other KFC outlets in towns through out Arkansas, at one time totaling over 20 KFC restaurants. On January 1, 1979 he purchased the Original Mexico Chiquito located at Protho Junction. Soon expansion occurred into full service restaurants and take out stores in Central Arkansas. Jerry received numerous awards. He was a finalist for Arkansas Business Executive of the Year in 1992. Arkansas Times Restauranteur of the Year in 1990. He also won the KFC HEART award in 1997. He was on the Executive Chefs Council for KFC; Past President of the Greater Southwestern Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchise Association; served on NCAC (National Advertising Council with KFC); he was secretary/treasurer for both the Central Arkansas KFC Advertising Coop, and the Northwest Arkansas Advertising Coop. He was a innovator and helped developed new concepts and products that you still see today in KFC, such as Crispy Strips, buffet, and non fried chicken. He served on many local community boards and associations such as Board of Directors at First Commercial Bank (Regions); Board of Directors at Pulaski Academy, and he was instrumental in the development of the Pre-School at Pulaski Academy. Jerry semi-retired in 2000 to spend more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a world traveler and adventurer! Often times, taking friends, family, and employees on wonderful trips. He was a wine connoseiur, and loved the experience of fine dining with friends and family. Jerry was a HOG fan! He was hooked after hearing his first HOG CALL! He enjoyed traveling to bowl games, basketball tournaments, and NCAA finals. Over the past 40 years in his restaurant business, he has gained the respect and loyalty of many long time employees. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.D. & Bernice Haynie, also, his loving wife, Betty, who passed away in 2004. Jerry is survived by his five daughters, Jennifer Hedgecock (John), of Bentonville, Arkansas, Lisa Glidewell, (Scott), Kimberly Haynie (Fiance, Rocco Forgione), Pam Johnston (Matt), and Patti Jones (Chad), all of Maumelle, Arkansas; grandchildren, John Nolen, Katelyn, and Loren Hedgecock, Gerald (Jack), James, and Ben Glidewell, Drew, Mallory, Megan, & Lindsey Johnston, Stephanie, Cade, Ethan, and Luke Jones; his fiance, Susie Mitchel of Little Rock and sisters, Kay Butler of Snellville, Georgia. Linda McCandless (Don) of Lexington, Nebraska, and Billie Ann Mowery (Bob) of Little Rock, Arkansas. Visitation will be held at Ruebel Funeral Home on Monday, March 7, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at St. James United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. Memorials made by made to St. James United Methodist Church 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, AR 72212

Aloha Haynie Ohana,
I knew both your Mom and Dad for over 16 years..They were the most Loving couple. They had a sweetness and kindness about them both.I was always happy to help them in any way. They had an eye for beauty and it was reflected in their home and personal style. They always treated me with so much Love. They were a joy to be around.I will truly miss seeing Jerry on his frequent visits to Hawaii.I remember one of the kindest things Mr.Haynie told me after your Mom passed he said"dont work so hard that you let your time with your children pass before your eyes"He said I should slow down and take time for myself and my kids.He was right. That was some six years ago and I really did take it to heart.Wisdom comes from years.I will cherish the memories from my time spent with the Haynies.I loved them both very much. How Lucky they are to be together again in Heaven.
Love to all the Haynie Girls and Family,
Vera

Aloha to all of Jerry's family. We have many guests that have made the Kohala Coast their choice for vacationing. Jerry is at the very top of the list for all of us who have had the good fortune of knowing him.. It was always a great feeling when he would return. You father and grandfather was a wonderful human being and when he arrived at the gates of heaven I am sure he was escorted through no questions asked and taken immediately to a beautiful ocean front golf course to enjoy the game he loved.
Take care!

My first job was KFC on JFK in 1968 when I was 16 yrs old. Jerry Haynie was my boss. This was a great job working with Debbie Ault, Becky Weiler and Tommy Lyons (who later became a great employee and friend of Mr Haynie). I remember one time a woman came in and paid with a $100 bill. Later that evening, Mr Haynie called me into his office. I was so scared-he told me that the woman had called him to tell him that I had given her change--$114.00. Thank goodness I didn't lose my job. He was great! One of the best bosses I ever had. They just don't make bosses like him anymore. My thoughts and prayers are with you all...I know he will truly be missed by all...

Valerie and I are so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I was a buddy of Jerry's from the early days in North Memphis. I lived on Dunlap St. and Jerry's home was around the corner on Chelsea. Jerry and I spent many an hour playing basketball and I have many fond memories of Jerry. I have a picture of Jerry taken at the Memphis Fairgrounds with myself and three other friends and if you wish a copy, I will send it by email. Again Valerie and I send our condolences. It was with shock that I received the phone call from Kim, that Jerry has passed away- I had no idea that he was not well, and had just sent him an email, having not heard from him for some time, wondering what was going on with him.

To everyone in the Haynie family and Susan of course, my thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult and sad time.

Jerry was much loved by everyone here at Mauna Lani. I met Jerry in 1995 and sold him the condo at Mauna Lani Point, C 302 which was a very special place to him- an awesome retreat with the most beautiful ocean views in Hawaii. We spent many days over the years with family and friends searching for a "better" home that would accomodate everyone, but when we came back to his condo- he would always say the same thing- that he had such a special place, and he couldn't bring himself to leave it. I know he had many many very special times here in Hawaii and we will miss him.

He was a kind and generous man and he will be missed terribly by many, including myself and my wife Dalia whom he always treated so kindly.
I cherish my memories of the times I spent with Jerry here in Costa Rica and will remember his smile and the twinkle in his eyes always!
With deepest condolences to his loving family,

Jennifer, Lisa, Kim, Pam, and Patti,

You know that I consider you all family and want to thank you for sharing your parents with me as I grew up. They are both very vivid in so many of my memories. I cherish the times that I spent with your dad from eating cereal together in total silence while the rest of the house slept, to telling me 1-2-3 strikes your out on failed skiing attempts, to gracing me with my nickname Canda. I could go on and on, but what I most cherish are the times I have been able to watch his unmistakeable pride in each one of you. You all carry a piece of him and so with that, his legacy will continue. Love to all of you.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.

Jennifer, Lisa, Kim, Pam & Patti - I worked for Jerry in KFC for 10 years. Through him, Laura (my wife)and I were able to meet Colonel Sanders and many other events that have shaped our lives even to today. We own 2 restaurants, and many times I remember "the good ole' days" with KFC and early Mexico Chiquito. Those lessons learned have helped us be successful today. We will miss Jerry and Betty, but will never forget the time working with them. You will be in our prayers.
Sincerely,

Susie, We always enjoyed visiting with you and Jerry at the kitchen table when we came into town. Jerry was so gracious and generous, not only to our family, but to so many people!! It is a gift (blessing) that his daughters clearly received from him as well. You are all very warm, friendly, welcoming people. My husband and I always enjoyed hearing his views on business, sports, travel - whatever. He was a fascinating man who appeared to love life, family, businesses and all the challenges that went with all of it!! I loved watching him and Susie go out to meet their friends, him and his wine bag (purse). (my first exposure to a wine purse). We were blessed to know him. God Bless you all.

I am saddened to hear of Jerry's passing, I was blessed to have worked for Jerry for five years of my life for KFC, 1970 to 1975, Jerry made many lasting impressions on me in those years. Even after parting ways we would sometime meet at fuctions and he would always be pleasant and spend some time and share a glass of wine. Although we took different paths I had great respect for Jerry and his family. I remember when there were only three daughters him saying I'm gonna try one more time for a boy and got twin girls which we both got a laugh out of, but he was so proud of all his girls and Betty. We spent some fun days at his home playing and visiting. Jerry will be sorrley missed. God bless all five of the girls and their family.

I was so fortunate to be one of "Jerry's girls" throughout high school! He definitely loved his family, and I have many happy memories of the times our crazy antics would cause him to crack a smile while Mrs. Haynie would just shake her head and say, "Girls..." Much love and many prayers to all of you...
