Biography: Dr. Selma Ann Plowman Hobby passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22nd 2011. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends she had touched in ways great and small through her memorable life. Selma was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on March 15th 1936, the eldest child of Norvell N. Plowman and Alleen Shillcutt Plowman. A lifelong resident of Little Rock, she graduated from Little Rock High School in 1953. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville receiving three degrees culminating with her Doctor of Education in 1966. She dedicated 44 years to education teaching Political Science, History, and Education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels throughout the University of Arkansas system after beginning her career as an English teacher in the Little Rock School District. She supervised practice teachers and served as a mentor to young teachers, and was a published author and frequent guest lecturer. She retired from the Little Rock School District as an administrator in 2001. Selma was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, and felt fortunate that each of her children were both baptized and confirmed there. Her last note was to the Church expressing her heartfelt thanks for the cards, visits, and prayers she received while in the hospital. Selma married Richard Brentwood Hobby on June 7th, 1957 and they remained happily wed the next 53 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2007 at a gala celebration among family and friends. She dearly loved each and every member of her family and was especially comforted by the loving attention she received in her last days from her husband and children, her brother Norvell N. Plowman, her sister Nancy Belle Woodson, and her nieces Allison P. Hatfield and Leslie P. Fisken. Selma is survived by her husband Richard and her children R. Brent Hobby and his wife the Rev. Kim A. Hobby of Morristown, Tennessee, N. Melissa Hobby of Frederick, Maryland, and Gregory N. Hobby of Little Rock; her brother Norvell N. Mrs. Hobby was my English teacher in Junior High School. She was not only a good teacher but a kind woman who understood how awkward junior high can be for some of us. I was also lucky enough to have had her as my mentor when I interned in Little Rock as a teacher. She was a delightful woman who enriched the lives of many.

I just wanted you to know that she will be remembered by this student forever.

It was a great pleasure knowing and working with Selma during our years together in graduate school at Fayetteville and, later, when I was at UALR. A wonderfully pleasant person, she will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.

To the Hobby and Plowman families go my prayers at this sad time. I am happy that I was able to visit with Selma a couple of summers ago while I was with family in Arkansas. As a cousin, I realize that our 'family' is now diminished by one more. We share in the sense of loss. With my love, Joyce. (Daughter of Raymond & Mildred
Shillcutt; sister of Ray,Jr., Gail & Larry)

We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of our dear friend, "Mrs. Selma". We appreciated her patronage for the many years that she was able to drive to England and spend time with us. She had such a wealth of knowledge and we enjoyed listening to her words of wisdom. Also, she always talked about her loving family and how special they were to her.
May God bless you during this difficult time and our prayers are with her family.

Hi Hobby, it was a shock to see Selma's obit in the paper. It is also hard to believe so many years have passed. Henry passed away recently, and he did not recognize anyone, but he was talking about "Hobby" Hope you and your family will find a way to cope. Selma really accomplished a lot in her lifetime.

Ashley and I were so sorry to hear about Selma's passing. We know how very close Melissa was to her mother and know that this is a great loss for her as it is to all of Selma's family. Jack will miss his Mimi but he is old enough to carry wonderful memories of her through his life.

Selma was a really strong woman in a day when that was very difficult to be and she accomplished much of which her family should be rightfully proud.
