Biography: George Dudley Swann, age 80 of Little Rock AR, died on January 6, 2011 at home surrounded by loved ones. Dudley was born in Mineola, TX on July 20, 1930 to Grace Baldwin and Dudley Douglas Swann. He was the first of five children. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joe Ann McBroom Swann. Dudley was a good business man who grew up working in the basket manufacturing business in East Texas and Nashville, AR. He owned and operated Little Rock Crate and Basket Company, which he purchased in the mid-60?s with the help of friends, and Nashville Crate Company which he and his brother, Henry purchased in 1970 and operated until closing in 2002. The company in Little Rock manufactures wooden wirebound fruit and vegetable containers such as bushel baskets. The company has been in continuous operation since 1916 and one of the few remaining basket manufacturers in the United States. The company remains a family owned business in Little Rock, AR. Dudley was a life- long outdoorsman, but especially loved turkey hunting at ?The Land?, property he owned in Faulkner County. His favorite saying there was ?spring and summer are for the women and children; fall and winter is for the men and boys.? There they enjoyed large family and friend gatherings. Summers were spent at ?The Land? running their peach orchard, Point 0 Ridge, one of his many projects he designed to keep his family together enjoying good times and grandchildren. The door was always open to friends and family who gathered most weekends for ?wine down? times, jeep and ATV rides, fishing and hunting and watching the grandchildren perform their birthday performances for the family. Almost all family members had summer birthdays. Dudley was also an active member and served as President of Lakeside County Club during the 60?s and 70?s. He was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church. In addition to his wife Joe Ann, Dudley is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Swann-Mendez of Little Rock, son George Dudley, Jr. and wife Kathy, son William Douglas and wife Lisa, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two sisters, Betty Harris of Kansas City, and Mary Ann Scott of the Grand Cayman Islands. He also leaves numerous cousins, friends, and loyal employees. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Henry Swann of Nashville, AR., and his sister Patsy Harrell of Greenbrier, AR. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday at Ruebel Funeral Home and services on Monday, January 10 at 2 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Dudley?s honor to the American Heart Association, Arkansas Children?s Hospital, or a favorite charity. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Doug,

I was very saddened to receive Tom's e-mail telling of your dad's passing. It was a real privilege getting to know him over the years. He was a real fighter and a gentleman.

And he had a great wit about him.

I'll never forget the first time we met. It was at his office. He looked at me and said that I must not be much to me since I was so short. That was hilarious! We both had a great laugh.

He was a great man. We'll all miss him.

We are very sad to hear of Dudley's death and extend our deepest sympathy to Joe Ann and the family. We are so thankful, though, that we had the opportunity to be a small part of his life. As my sister posted earlier, Joe Ann and Dudley were a part of our life before we were ever born. They were high school friends of my parents and before we ever met them, we knew of Joe Ann and Dudley.

My favorite memories of Dudley and the family are at "the land" picking peaches and visiting with the family. Oh! And, I love the story of Joe Ann and Dudley's marriage.

Dudley leaves behind a great legacy. Our prayers will be with you in the days ahead.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dudley's passing. A flood of memories poured in while reading the obituary. Memories that seemed from only yesterday. My time at the factory, adventures with Dudley Jr., time at the land, the Peach Orchard... I was involved in the planting of the first Peach Orchard there. I know you remember me, I was that annoying kid calling at the top of my lungs for everyone to hurry and pulling at the guide rope with all my might. What you don't know is that Dudley, not only encouraged that behaviour, he instigated it. "My voice is too old to carry that far" he said to me. The greater the protests from the top of the hill the more he prodded me to continue. "You're going to get me in trouble" I said. "Oh, they'll get over it." was his reply. I bet you never did! We giggled like High School sophmores at the frustration we were causing. I'll never forget those times. My thoughts, love, and prayers are with each of you today.

Stephanie and I are both "Daddys'" girls and I know how much her Daddy will be missed. I always loved how welcome Dudley made me feel when I was around the family. My heart goes out to Stephanie and the rest of the family.

My mom (Peggy Purtle Harrison) went to high school with Joe Ann, my dad (Don Harrison) went to high school with Dudley. I've known or known of Dudley all my life. I remember going to pick peaches at "the Land" and you have been a part of my life and my history for as long as I can remember. They also let us fish there, too! I am so sorry for the loss of such a good friend of my parents, and a man who was very special to me - along with the rest of your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Dudley was my cousin and we spent many days of our boyhood together. Even as adults we shared a companionship even though I was living in Calif. at the time. He was instrumental in my return to Ark. as he found a house and told me to "buy it".
As we grew older, we saw less of each other but the bond is still there, he will be missed.

Our sympathy to the family. Mr. Swann loved playing the game ..... of life. He was probably working on some plan for the next life when he left this one.
