Biography: Helen Higgins Wittenberg “Nanny”, 94, of Little Rock, died surrounded by her family Monday, October 18, 2010. She was born June 8, 1916 in Arkansas City, Kansas to the late Clyde Ellsworth Higgins and Lottie Poppellwell Higgins Street. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George Hyde Wittenberg Jr. She was also preceded in death by her sister Mildred Scull. Helen is survived by her sons George Hyde Wittenberg III (Peter Callaway) and Thomas Clyde Wittenberg (Lillian) all of Little Rock. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Jessica Wittenberg Howard, Toby Wittenberg Murry (Chad), Shelby Wittenberg Cotton (Jack), Jennifer Wittenberg Cockrell (Rogers), and Justin Thomas Wittenberg, all of Little Rock. She is further survived by six great-grandchildren; Jacob and Tatum Howard, Oliver and Max Murry, and Witt and Thomas Cotton. Other family members that remained very close to her are her brother-in-law Gordon Wittenberg and daughter-in-law Beverly Wittenberg and constant friend Evan Williams. The family would like to thank the two women, Sandra and Rose, who took constant care of Helen. Helen very proudly attended Forest Park Elementary School, where she and her sister walked to and from school. She graduated from Little Rock High School in 1932 then attended Little Rock Junior College (UALR). She married George on December 7, 1938. She was a past president of the Aesthic Club, past president of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Cancer Society, past president of the Junior League of Little Rock, member of Riverdale Country Club, member of Lake Side Country Club, member Country Club of Little Rock, member of Edelweiss Club and a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. She loved to play bridge and mahjong with her friends, as well as needlepoint. She did the crossword puzzle everyday and it is estimated that she read at least 7500 books over the last 30 years. She was a Cubs fan and was passionate about baseball throughout her life. She loved her family and friends dearly. A visitation will take place Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Friday, October 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family will receive guests and friends at her son George’s home at 1509 Louisiana Street in the days leading up to the services.
