anne: my sister, stewart, sent me the obituary notice about your mother. I'm glad she was blessed with such a long life, and certainly one well lived. There are so many memories of her that I cherish. You probably never knew how much I admired her and always thought of her as a role model . I loved reading the comments about her talent as a teacher and am sory I never experienced her as an algebra teacher - maybe I,too, could have understood it! Every time we vacation in Sarasota, I think of that summer at the beach - how generous she was to do that for me! With my sisters still in Arkansas, I get back home every now and then. I'd love to catch up and learn how your life has unfolded.

with warmest sympathy, nancy (stobaugh) willis

Dr. Gates was a glorious person, and indeed a teacher's teacher. I had the privilege of sitting under her pedantry for two-summer semesters of Algebra, of which I had never before truly understood. It was her labor of love that helped me understand, and I never forget her delight and sweetness in sharing her craft. That was in the summer of 1974, and I shall always have beautiful memories of great and caring teacher (prof) she was. What a blessed memory.

This wonderful lady was the ONLY teacher who was ever able to make me understand Algebra. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I was in college that it happened. I barely passed Algebra in high school and felt very stupid. At UALR I had to have a math class to graduate so I took Algebra for Elementary Education majors, taught by Dr. Gates. I can't describe how I felt when I finally "got it." It was such a thrill. After reading her obituary, I realize she was not only a terrific teacher but a terrific person as well.
