Doc: I have felt your family's pain and been uplifted by the strength of your family's faith and resolve. I have worn the band without fail as a sign of solidarity and support. I hurt for you and at the same time admire the family that shared with others such a bright gift that was not shared long enough. "nil desperandum"

David, Susie, and Family: I will always remember Win in his performance in April 2008 in the Catholic High play of Harvey. Win acted the part of Elwood P. Dowd, played so well by Jimmy Stewart in the movie version. That role demands a person of special grace and love to truly capture the spirit of a man who converses with a pooka (an invisible rabbit). But the role also requires that the actor exudes someone that truly loves life and people no matter their station in life and takes each person as they are with no reservations. That was the essence of Win. A true loving and caring spirit. I still have a copy of the Harvey play program with Win's picture in it.I will always keep it with me! As a member of the Catholic High School Board, we send our prayers and thoughts to you! God Bless!!! Reg Rogers Catholic High '77

David, Susie, Scott and Robert,
Ditto what my wife stated in her e-mail:we love you guys and our heart hurts for you.
I must share a brief story with you about Win from about 1995; As you may remember, Scott and Ross played together on the Wardlaw Orthodontics t-ball team at Rosedale. Win was about 4 or 5 that summer,a year too young to be on the team. It drove Win nuts that he couldn't be out there playing with his brother. One night between innings David asked the ump if Win could hit one ball off the tee before Win had heart failure. The ump obliged, and Win sttepped up there and knocked the tar out of the ball. Win then ran as hard as he could down the THIRD base line until he reached the base! The entire stands were by now clapping and cheering. Win had a grin from ear to ear--I'll never forget that grin. He had that same ear-to-ear grin in the pictures I saw at the service. He touched many lives in 20 short years!
God Bless all of you

Dear Wardlaw Family,

You have all been so on our minds! While we did not know Win well, he touched our lives again recently while dropping off/picking up Jesse from Camp Winnamocka! Both Wade and I had commented what a fine young man he was, and awesome example for my boys to see - you raised him well. The service at Catholic this week was again another testament to all those lives he touched, his love for life and fun spirit! Words can not describe our sorrow for your lovely family! We have and will continue to keep you in our prayers! God bless you all!

Dear David, Susie, Scott, and Robert,

The four of you and Win will always hold a special place in our hearts. We have such good memories of the time you shared with us at Trinity UMC. Since then we let life keep us busy, the years fly by, and we don't see enough of old friends like you. But events like this make us painfully aware of how short life can be and how valuable our friends are.

Our hearts are breaking for you. We're praying for you to keep receiving God's strength to get you through. We know your faith will help you through this.

David and Susie, you know more than ever now how well your boys have turned out. They have all touched so many hearts, and that is proof of how well you raised them. We know you are proud parents, as you should be.

We love you all.

Dr. Wardlaw and Family,
Although our whole family was heartbroken to hear of Win's passing, we all agreed that the greatest disservice that could be done to him was to feel only sadness during this painful time. Having had the pleasure of calling Win our good friend, Parker and I remember him being able to find comfort (and luckily laughter) in every situation, every hand that life deals us. God gives us blessings in disguise. Win was the type of person who wanted to help ten people at once if he could, making them laugh and offering encouragement in times of need and sadness. In life, he could not help everyone all the time as he wished he could. God took him home so that now he can watch over us all at any (and all!) times. Although we all wish Win was still physically here with us, a part of me takes comfort in knowing Win is up there looking out for all of us like he wanted to in life. He can now be with everyone at any time putting some sun and smiles on our faces when we need him most. That is God's blessing to us. We are praying for your family and know that you guys will be ok. Win will make sure of that!
Love and prayers,

That kid was seriously one of the funniest people to be on stage with. Win made me laugh one of the hardest laughs I ever had one time at Chick-Fil-A after rehearsal. He was fantastic in Harvey and I would've loved to see what else he was capable of stage wise. He was the one who taught me how to Crank Dat Batman and seriously one of the coolest kids I've ever met.

I'll always remember your hilarious creeper face.....it was a joy to play your sister on stage with you, Win. I couldn't think of a better Elwood besides Stewart himself. You brought your own charm to the character, and made so many people fall in love with Elwood, just as they had fallen in love with you.

God bless him and his family as they go through this tough time.

Me and Zach Louks were at work when we got the news. Everything fell silent around us, as we just kind of stood there shocked.
I look back on my time in Boy Scouts where I knew Win the most and I remember his unique personality that stood out among the patrol. I remember all of the camping trips we went on and him being there, always staying upbeat with what was going on. I don't ever remember seeing a frown on that face. I was told to look back on Win's life and bear a smile on my face because of the great life he did have...though it is hard to not feel a tear come up. If I do not get the chance to see the Wardlaw family at the services, I wanted to at least leave this note. I am so sorry, my heart truly goes out to you. There is a hole where Win was in my heart, as well as everyone else's. I will try to look back and smile, and appreciate the beautiful life that he lead and be thankful he was a part of my life. I hope that church is packed today; Win deserves it.

"Sunny D" David & Susie,
To the family of perpetual smiles: Although I never knew Win very well, what I do remeber about him always makes me smile. He was hilarious as a Rocket Skit Cheerleader. I still laugh when I think of the "300" skit he and the other boys performed during a Rocket's half-time at War Memorial. I am privileged to have such a wonderful memory, as I am privileged to call you friends. Your family always has a genuine smile, and a sincere hello to offer to everyone you meet. Keep smiling, as Win will always be in your heart.

I knew your son for six days. I was in camp winnamocka session two this year.He was the counselor of rhode island the cabin I was in. He was the best. All of us loved having him as a counselor. He was a role model for me. He cared for every kid in the cabin. He used his own money to buy us midnight snacks like salsa! He encouraged me to try new things like highropes, with his encouragment I made it. He made a nickname for me that every counselor started calling me "b-hop". I will always remember him, love him, and miss him. I pray for him and your family everyday. It's amazing how i knew him for six days and he has become my role model.

Dear Susie & David, Robert and Scott, and Family:

My heart aches for you in the loss of Win. I myself am a Bereaved Parent. . I wish that I could ease your pain. Remember that Win loves you and (believe)that you are wonderful parents.

Win was an exceptional young man. My son, Jonathan Fili (CHS '09)often spoke highly of Win and how much he was loved. He and Christy (his twin) were in Harvey with Win, and thought Win was a wonderful young man full of life, love and laughter, and they often spoke of how much fun they all had at rehearsal. There are no words that heal the hurt that you feel, but please know that we are all praying for you.

My son, Michael, died at age 10 from a brain aneurysm. It will be 7 years ago in August.
What helped me so much in the initial weeks after Michael died was the physical presence of people I was close to. To hug and hold my surviving children. To be held and hugged by my family and friends...to touch and hold things that belonged to Michael. And, touches from the hearts of other people: the cards, the incredible amount of food from individuals... letters and phone calls from people I had never met who were touched by the story of my son. Such heartfelt gestures give life when life has gone out of your existence.

Please call me if I can help in any way. I will continue to pray for you and your whole family.

Peace be with you,
Luanne (Fili) McCarty

Dear David and Susie,

Mary and I were heartbroken to hear of your loss. No mere words can express our thoughts for you all at this time. While we did not have the pleasure of knowing your Win, his record or accomplishments at such a young age is inspiring. The world is clearly a better place for his having been here. David and Susie, you shall always find it here! God bless,

Dear Wardlaw Family,

While I did not know Win very well, I sat next to him every day in our International Studies class this past semester at Rhodes. He was always very kind and had insightful things to say during class. I remember on the day of the final exam he asked if I had an extra Blue Book, and I gladly gave him one of the extras I had brought because I knew someone might need one. He was so polite and grateful, a true testament to the kind person that he was. I only wish that I had been able to better know the generous and loving person that everyone knew has described him to be. I know that his close friends, as well as the rest of the students at Rhodes love and miss him, and will always remember his kind spirit. We may have lost a fellow classmate, but God has gained an Angel in Heaven. May God be with your family and all of the people who will forever miss Win. I, as well as the rest of my classmates have you in our prayers. God Bless

Sincerely,

Even though it was seems like just yesterday when I first met Win I could tell that he was definately a wonderful individual. Even though I felt like an outsider towards all the Arkansas kids we were all co workers and soon became equal. I never had the chance to have Win as a co-counselor but I was blessed with his presence I have been and will continue praying not only for Win but yalls entire family!

We are heartbroken by the loss of Win. Please know that you are close in every thought and prayer.

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget."

Wardlaw Family,

What a horrible accident and such a youg beautiful life taken too soon. I know the Catholic High Men of 08 are feeling the tremendous loss of their brother. And we can only imagine the loss that Scott and Robert feel, along with the rest of you. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you now to help get you through this tragedy with faith and love. God will truly have a gift with him in Win.

Dearest Susie & David, I cannot adequately express the deep sorrow and pain I feel for you and your beautiful family for the loss of Win. I am praying for each of you. What a tremendous young man Win was here on Earth for the short time we had him. In Heaven, Win now has what we all yearn for -- a perfect home with our Heavenly Father. May God bless you two, Scott and Robert, Clayta and Penny, Fay and Gail and all others in your family and the host of friends whose life your dear son Win touched in such a magnificent, meaningful way. I'm sure that upon Win's arrival at the Pearly Gates, one of the first things he heard was "Well done, my good and faithful Servant." With love and admiration, Brenda Scisson

Our hearts just broke when we heard the tragic news of the loss of your precious Win.
The gates of heaven opened wide and entered in
a beautiful man waiting to bless the lives of those in heaven as much as did those on earth.
I pray for each and every day to fill you with
only precious memories of the blessing and gift he was to all who knew him.

While working at Holy Souls, you know the children so well. You learn to love them. Win was special. I knew that from Kindergarten. Susie, David, Scott and Robert, my prayers and love are sent to you, and my dear Win, who is now sitting with Jesus, getting his new assignemnts to take care of all the children in heaven. May the peace of our Lord help you through this.

It's hard to know just what to say,
When one so young is taken away.
Far too soon he had to part,
His memory forever engraved in your heart.

We only knew him for a short while,
But the life he led made us smile.
He was so handsome and oh so rare,
Life as they say just isn't fair.

Those gone before him will watch him with care,
Till the day comes when we'll all join him there.

Know Win is watching from heaven above,
And with each ray of sunshine, he is sending his love.

We are thinking of the Wardlaw family-you are in our thoughts and prayers!

I am Libby Minshall's uncle and I was genuinely saddened when my sister Eve (Maggie) alerted me of the tragedy.

A bright bright young life full of hope, faith, love, caring, sharing, energy, happiness, accomplishment, achievement, connectivity, potential and friends has now ended. Our comfort comes from knowing Winston did not suffer and is at total peace now in heaven. He leaves with us a meaningful memorable legacy.

Lydia joins me in sincerely expressing our sympathy and concern for the Wardlaw family and friends there. We hope the memorial service tomorrow truly is a celebration of a productive life well lived blessed by God.

We hope every time you contemplate this wonderful young man, warm warm feelings fill you and smiles cross your faces. Allow Winston to be a consistent reminder of what is right in the world today. He touched many lives, even at his young age, in positive fashion.Let us do likewise.

Even though we did not know him personally, I feel connected three ways to him...
*wonderful Libby holds him in highest regard,
*we are Presbyterians (First Presbyterian Church, Nashville),and
*I am a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon ,and our Rhodes chapter clearly will dearly miss him.

Your family is in our prayers.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wardlaw,

I did not know your son but I know his Grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Wardlaw and his Aunt Marcia through AETN's World War II Oral History Archive, In Their Words. I am also an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Wardlaw's story has had a major impact on the viewers of our website and on me personally. I know that he and his family are close and loving and this must be excruciating to you.

I wish to express my condolences on the loss of your son. I know that he was a young man full of potential and good character. He appeared to be very active in his community, school and family. That is a fine legacy.

I hope that you find solace that he is in the great reward now and that his time here on Earth has not gone unnoticed, even by those who have never met him. May God bless you and your family ever on.

In Deepest Sympathy,

Dear Dr. David & Susie~

It has been so long since I have seen you guys but even longer since I was around Win. Kim & I were talking about him & how long it had been since I saw him last. It was 1998 when Mally was born & I decided to stay home with her; Win was eight & I remember his cute little glasses, bright eyes & vibrant smile. He was always so funny. I wish I could have known him better as he was growing but by the look of this picture, he is that same little guy I remember.

I love you both, your family, & I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you.
