I've always held that if one is extremely fortunate in life, one will have good memories and that most of these will involve close friends and relatives. Tom Cloar, "Dr. Cloar" as I always refered to Tom, was one such great friend and mentor. As Betty, Tee, and Elizabeth know, I first fell into their lives as a young student at Southwestrn at Memphis in 1969. I was assigned a work-study job in the Psychology Department and it was there for 4 years that I worked closely with Dr. Cloar. Those were 4 years that were formative for me. Tom was simply brilliant--in his own humble manner. I was so welcomed by him and his family! They took me on family vacations, I baby-sat Tee and Elizabeth, and to this day, I recall so many kindnesses that Tom demonstrated to me and to others. He enriched my life then and continues to do so for all time. May he rest in Peace. He made the world a better place.

I'm so happy to read all these nice things about my Uncle Tommy. Thank you to everyone who shared their special memories. I will miss my Uncle Tommy. He had a great way of cutting to the chase of any conversation. Uncle Tommy taught all the grandchildren that life is not about superficial appearances or things, it's about what you know, what you have to say, and who you love. He knew a lot, said a lot, and loved everyone in his life very much. He will be missed by many.

I was a fraternity brother of Tommy's in the early 1960's. He had a great sense of wry humor and could cut to the heart of the discussion when it needed clarification. I was so happy to see that Tommy taught at the school he loved so much. With love, George Awsumb, Class of 1961

Ralph, Jr. and Bobby:

I am sorry that your wonderful threesome has been broken up after all of these years. Each of three of you made a special contribution, with maybe Tommy's bringing a little bit more consistency and saneness, you think? I can still remember some of the things that he said and the way he said them. I miss the old times and him.

A friend, Jay Dickey.

I'm from PB and class of '64 and although I played football with Ralph, I'm sure one of my brothers (Jim and Bill - both deceased) probably knew Tommy.

Please accept my condolences to the entire family.

Tommy was a dear friend and colleague for many years at Rhodes. We had many spirited debates about psychology and often taught classes together. Our children loved him dearly for his many years as “Captain Cloar” at Lausanne Summer Camp. Our condolences go out to Libba and Tee and the rest of Tommy’s family.
