Biography: Sara Lay Copas, age 90, of Little Rock died Friday, March 19, 2010. Born in Winder, Georgia on September 13, 1919, Sara was the daughter of Daisy and J.B. Lay and the sister of Reba Henson, M.R. Lay, G.E. Lay and Horace Austin who all preceded her in death. She graduated from Winder High School in 1936 where she was named Most Attractive and Most Dignified by her classmates. Sara then entered the world of politics where she campaigned for Senator Dick Russell and served in an elite group of “body guards” for the Senator. She married John Martin Copas on February 26, 1939 and the couple later transferred to Little Rock where her husband worked for the Corps of Engineers and Sara worked as a bookkeeper for Fones Brothers Hardware Company which was located where the Central Arkansas Library now calls home. Sara continued work until her son Scott was born followed by daughter, Lyn. When both children were of school age Sara returned to the work force and also began a career with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Her love for make-up proved to be advantageous as she excelled so greatly she was close to being gifted the coveted Pink Cadillac the cosmetic company is known for. Unfortunately, in the late 1970’s she suffered from a stroke which ended her career. As a true Southern Belle, Sara was a stickler for etiquette and was fashion forward at all times. Her great love was her children and grandchildren who were by her side when she passed away. Sara, affectionately known as “Coco” by her grandchildren, is survived by her daughter Lyn Copas of Little Rock; son Scott Copas and his wife Shayla of Maumelle and five grandchildren; Robyn Clark and her husband Mark of Hattisburg, Mississippi, Beth Copas of Fayetteville, Michael Copas of Chicago Illinois, Nicholas Copas of Little Rock and Chelsey Copas of Maumelle; one great-grandchild, Page Hoover of Fayetteville. She is also survived by her favorite nephew, Hubert Henson and his wife Scarlett of Memphis, Tennessee and great-nieces, Danah Leach of Memphis, Tennessee; and Terri Connolly and her husband Joe of Valencia California. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 5 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham in Little Rock. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 10 a.m. at Pulaski Heights Christian Church, 4724 Hillcrest Avenue. Reverend Holly Patton will officiate. A private family burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. The family wishes to extend their eternal gratitude to Sara’s caregivers Carrie Beavers, Mary Beavers, Marisa Vandett and Felicia Onyekweli. The family would also like to thank Baptist Health and Baptist Hospice for their support and care in the final days of our beloved Sara’s life.
