Biography: James Richard Claiborne Cobb, 67, of Little Rock, died suddenly January 16, 2010. Jim Cobb was a very private person; the only way this obituary could be published would be “over his dead body”. That being said, his family is extremely proud of his life, what he stood for, his compassion, his work and his love for family, friends and Arkansas, and they want to share with you some of that life. Jim grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, Tampa, Florida, and Wilmington, Deleware. He was educated at the Tower Hill School, the Ashville School for Boys and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and served as president and as pledge trainer. He was a Coca Cola bottler in Wilmington and a banker in Little Rock, where he was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Commercial Corp. and Chairman of First Commercial Bank when he retired in 1996 to fish and hunt at his favorite places: the Ouachita River, the Cross Pond Duck Club and Whiskey Tree Duck Club. Before and after his retirement he served Little Rock and Arkansas on many boards: Pulaski Academy, Arkansas Children’s Hospital Foundation; he was Chairman of the Board of CART I, CARTI Foundation (founding member), Arkansas Caduceus Club, and the American Cancer Society (Arkansas Division and Pulaski County units) and was the Arkansas delegate to the National Board of Delegates of the American Cancer Society. Jim received the Shuffield Award from the Arkansas Medical Society. Jim loved to travel, especially to Africa, to Argentina where he hunted dove, and to Belize and Crested Butte, CO, where he fished for bonefish, tarpon, snook, snapper and trout. Jim is survived by his wife, Virginia Stuart Chapman Cobb; his son, Dr. William Claiborne Cobb and his wife Natalie of Newport, Arkansas; his daughter, Cynthia Ruffin Cobb of Los Angeles, California and three grandchildren, John, Katie, and Emily Cobb of Newport, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Whitaker Cobb and James Harvol Cobb of Little Rock, his brother, William Albert Bellingraph and his sister, Elizabeth Ruffin Bellingraph McClure. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 18, 2010 at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. There will be a private family graveside service. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com Memorials may be made to the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, 4301 W. Markham #623, Little Rock, AR 72205 or to Arkansas Children's Hospital, 800 Marshall St., Little Rock, AR 72202

What fun we had in the summers when Jimmy would come to his "Little Rock House". Lee Newman, Henry Thomas and I would have such "motorcycle fun". I will never forget the Coca Cola machine on the outdoor porch in Edgehill. 6 ounce bottles of Coke, and FREE! To Jimmy's children, I never met you'all, but I am sure you "turned out" OK.

Saddened by Jim's passing. I lived down the street from him in the
Forties -- Fifties. ' Was a friend of Betty and Bill. I have a good
photo of Jim as a boy in front of his home on Armisted Road and
will gladly give it to the family.
God bless, Grady Miller

Stuart,

We are so very saddened to hear of Jim's death. We didn't learn of it until too late for the services but wanted you to know you and your family are in our prayers.

We saw you and Jim at the brunch at Bitsy's house in Scott a few weeks ago but didn't get to really visit with you.

You both remain very special people in our lives and memories.

God Bless you and all the family.

Jim exemplified the meaning of the church. Through his generousity to our daughter, Natalie, and with his outpouring of hospitality and love to all of our family, he was truly a blessing to us all. He provided us the opportunity to travel on wonderful vacations which included gathering the whole family together. He rejoiced with us in our accomplishments and understood our disappointments. He was our voice of reason and wisdom. We were so fortunate to share grandchildren with him and to be a part of his life. He will be missed by our entire family very, very much.

Our hearts are breaking for all of you, and we pray that God will surround you with his great love and peace. What a wonderful man the world has lost! We so fondly remember our years in Little Rock and the fun times we had together as neighbors. We have loved keeping up with you all through Christmas cards and notes. Please accept my sincere condolences for the sudden loss of husband, father and grandfather. I met Jim when I was 23 yrs old beginning a new job at Commercial National Bank. He became a mentor and supporter and I owe him much. Jim demonstrated how to succeed in business while maintaining unquestioned character and standards, and while being truly gracious and kind to all along the way. I am so grateful to have known him.

What I will remember about Jim is his sense of humor, his love of music, his clear thinking, and his solid character. He was a wonderful uncle and a great man. I can't believe he's gone. We wish we could be there for the service.

To The Jim Cobb Family,

Mr. Cobb hired me in February 1974 to start working at Commercial National Bank. That was the start of my 25 year career with the bank. I remember that his office door was always open and I enjoyed talking to him on many occasions asking for his advice which I enjoyed receiving and put to use many times.

Please know that my prayers and thoughts are with the family at this time. God bless you.

Our fond nickname for Mr Cobb was the "Guardian Angel" and that was precisely what he was.
Jim had a heart of gold and will be sorely missed.
In our hour of need he was always there with a large helping hand.
True gentleman and friend to the whole Perez family of Belize.
You will always be in our hearts and mind, God Bless!

Jim and I met in the mid-1970's as competing bankers. We forged a mutual respect and friendship that allowed us cooperative efforts through the years. I found him to be a genuinely nice person, honest, forthright, sensitive to those who worked with and for him, and without the massive ego so common among his peers. His death saddens me for the Arkansas community, and most certainly for his family. May God comfort you and may you know that Jim Cobb's life indeed made a difference. I believe that is what God intends for each of us.

Stuart:

I tried very to make the service, but airline schedules too much to overcome.

Jack Milton and I talked about the possibility of coming down sometime later to see you, which I hope we can make happen.

My condolences to you and your children. Jim was a great brother and friend.

I hope you will have the White Rose ceremony, which is a brief and public fraternity ritual.

Sincerely,

Joel
