Biography: Charles W. Herrell, 79, of Little Rock, died on December 26, 2009. He was born on July 6, 1930 in Dallas, Texas to Emmett Douglas Herrell and Virgie Earline Herrell. He is preceded in death by his sister, Linda Pipkin of Oklahoma. His brother Ed Herrell of Dallas died on December 26, 2009. He is survived by two nieces: Debbie Ford and Patricia Cooper and two nephews, Gary Herrell and Michael Herrell; and a host of people who loved him as “adopted family” and by his beloved church family. Charlie graduated from SMU in the early 1950’s and had served as President of the Little Rock chapter of SMU alumni. He worked as a salesman most of his life working for Prentice-hall as a textbook representative and then selling Encyclopedia Britannica and Great Books, later heading up an Amway selling group. Charlie’s greatest service was in the area of hospitality. He served as an usher for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Arkansas Repertory Theatre groups as well as leadership positions with the Symphony Guild. In addition, he worked in security and ushering for Verizon Arena. Perhaps his utmost gift of radical hospitality was serving as head usher at First United Methodist Church Little Rock. Charlie was a member of the church for 41 years where he cultivated a reputation for offering a warm and cheerful welcome to everyone who came into the church. He was known for expressing gratitude and appreciation to all with whom he served. Charlie’s trademark comment to other ushers and those serving in worship leadership was, “Remind me to always tell you how much I appreciate all you do.” In addition to his ushering duties, Charlie was very active in teaching Sunday school classes within the church and for those living in residential facilities. Charlie had a heart for helping others and was the kind of person who did many random and extravagant acts of generosity and kindness without ever telling anyone. His ever-faithful yet quiet and cheerful presence will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 5 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church Little Rock with inurnment following in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist church Little Rock. Arrangements made by Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com
I remember him best as a faithful member of our neighborhood association and as one who had a ready smile and hug for all.
May he rest in peace.
