Biography: Edith Marie Angehr Smith, 96, of Little Rock passed away on December 8, 2009 at Chenal Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Marie was born to William and Elizabeth Arbelle Angehr on April 13, 1913, in Russellville, Arkansas, where she grew up and helped her mother run the Angehr House. She attended Arkansas Tech University, where she became executive secretary to President Hull and taught business courses. She married Dr. John McCollough Smith of Little Rock in 1937, and they were devotedly married 49 years until his death. Marie loved involvement in medical associations and served as president of the Pulaski County Medical Auxiliary, Arkansas Medical Auxiliary, and University of Arkansas Medical Auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of the Baptist Hospital Medical Auxiliary, St. Vincent’s Infirmary Auxiliary, and a charter board member of the History of Medical Associates. She volunteered at the Arkansas Cancer Research Center and the Caduceus Club. She was a member of the Little Rock Music Coterie, Fine Arts Club, Friends of Wildwood Park, and the Ridgeway Garden Club. As her children grew, she became a lifetime member of the PTA. There after she devoted herself to the Arkansas Arts Center where she loved volunteering in the Vineyard Tea Room. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church for 65 years, sang in the choir for 50 wonderfully satisfying years, and served as a Deacon and as president of Presbyterian Women where she was a lifetime member. She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Dr. John McCollough Smith, and her sister, Juanita Angehr Abernathy. She is survived by her five children, Dr. Douglas Blythe Smith (Jane Anne) of Little Rock, Dr. Donald Angehr Smith (Marie-France) of New York City, New York, Sandra Detwiler (Jack) of Dallas, Texas, Judy Pannier (Bob) of Great Falls, Virginia, and Robin McCollough Smith (Clarence) of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Marie's family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Parkway Village Health Center, Chenal Health Care and Rehabilitation Center and especially Edna Bennett, who lovingly cared for her daily for the last five years of her life. I will always remember the time she took to make new members feel welcome with her down to earth behavior. She never put on "airs". How grateful you must be to have been blessed with her as a Mother.
