Biography: Dorothy Glenn Downie, age 97, of Little Rock, died Sunday, September 20, 2009. She was born in Batesville, Arkansas the second of five children to E. H. (Ned) Glenn and May Rutherford Glenn. Dorothy graduated from Arkansas College (now Lyon College) with a degree in music, and afterwards taught violin at the college. In 1935, she married Blake Downie, a young lawyer from Little Rock. The newlyweds started out in St. Louis, where Blake began his long career as an attorney for Southwestern Bell Telephone. After WWII, the couple returned to Little Rock with their two children and made it their home. Dorothy purchased and operated the Downie Toy Center, now the Heights Toy Center. She later enjoyed a career selling residential real estate with the Bailey Corporation. A lifelong Presbyterian, Dorothy was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Stew pot. With a generous heart and a lively sense of humor, she was always quick to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors. She is survived by her children, Ned Downie of Fayetteville and Glenn Ellen Downie of New York; four grandchildren, Eve Dorman of Madison, WI, Alice McLaughlin of Washington, D.C., Megan Augustine of San Antonio, TX, and Blake Budney of Asheville, NC; and one great-grandchild, Anna Glenn Dorman. There will be a graveside service Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at Roselawn Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Reverend Karen Akin.
