Biography: Charlotte F. Straley, of Little Rock, passed away on August 20, 2009. She was born March 10, 1918 in Lougheed, Alberta, Canada. Her parents were Andrew and Dorothy Chalmers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard U. Straley. Also, preceding her were her parents, two brothers, James Chalmers and Howard Chalmers, and one sister, Mary Cory. Charlotte is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. and La Donna Straley of little Rock, as well as two grandsons, Phillip D. Straley and his wife, Jane, of Hong Kong and David K. Straley of Annapolis, Maryland. Charlotte enjoyed a life-long attachment to music, particularly church music. In her home state of Iowa she sang in a Methodist church choir that was directed by her sister, Mary. After she and her husband, Richard, retired to Florida, she was again active in church music, playing the organ and piano at her church. Then for many years she was the Director of Music at a large Methodist church in Punta Gorda, Florida. In 2008 she moved to Little Rock to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. She quickly became active at Trinity United Methodist Church where she volunteered to lead the handbell choir. Charlotte also enjoyed a lively game of cards and in her later years became an avid bridge player. She will be missed by her family and a long list of friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mississippi and Evergreen, Little Rock, AR 72227. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that gifts be made to the music ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

I knew Charlotte, as my Grandma Charlotte. She and my grandmother were best friends. My grandmother passed away before I was born from a terminal brain tumor, but she named me Charlotte Elizabeth before passing. I remember Grandma Charlotte calling me a monkey every time we visited her because I would literally climb her walls. One of my favorite pictures from my childhood is with this beautiful woman. She was the sweetest, spunky lady I've ever met and I know she left an impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

May I say that I so very much enjoyed knowing Charlotte. When I met her she was the music director at the little Methodist Church in Harbour Heights. She hooked me right away when she learned I played flute and for roughly the following three years I played with her at the church. It wasn't possible to say no to her, she had a way about her of winning you over! What was especially special about her was her attitude in life, it was ALWAYS cheery! She was an incredible role model for us all! And may I say she will be very much missed for years to come. I was and am a big fan of Charlotte! And I know she's still playing music! God Bless!

Mrs. Straley was my piano teacher and the music director of my church throughout my childhood in Punta Gorda, FL. I took piano lessons from her weekly for over ten years. My siblings all took piano lessons from her as well. She was a terrific person who had an important and positive impact on my life. God bless all those that knew her. She will be missed.

Our life was enriched when we met Charlotte. We shared our love for music and became very close friends. I often referred to her as my other Mom.
Charlotte will live in our hearts forever.
