Born December 3, 1930 in Fort Smith, she received her BA in English from Henderson State Teacher’s College in 1951 and later her Master’s in English from University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She was valedictorian of Fort Smith High School, Governor of Arkansas Girl’s State, and attended Girl’s Nation. A dedicated teacher, she impacted many in her years teaching high school English at Arkansas School for the Blind. Dearest Marilyn, Marcia, Mike, Matt, Mark, Binky and your families,

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Maggie's death this past week, and so sorry I did not know earlier to share with you this week of memory and grief. I am grateful that I finally got the message about your mom last night on my cell phone, and sorry you did not have the right number to reach me earlier.

As you know, I loved Maggie (Meg, still not easy for me) for many years, since our high school days, when she and Martin aced the class (probably the whole school) with straight A's and as Co-Valedictorians...not an easy act for little sis to follow. Probably my most memorable image of Meg was her smile, always there, always comforting, yet also very objective with her sharp and observing mind and humor. Her easy way with you guys, even when you were little warts, was a model for me, who tried to be less exacting like her in favor of the human element, but managed to get into my head and stress more. Maggie had her values straight. We traveled a long path together, and had many good letter, email and telephone conversations, and, though a dwindling connection partially due to age and distance over the past few years, shared late life love life girlish giggling during the past decade. I was thrilled to get to visit her in Little Rock and all of you, except Matt, and to be guided by her to the Clinton Memorial a few years ago.

I have been sad all week, shedding what seemed to be irrational tears, and didn't know what was the matter. I wonder now if some of this was picking up on your sadness, and perhaps hers, at the parting during this life of great love between grown children and their truly good mother. It is a blessing beyond description, and I am proud of your family for being such stalwart and loving creatures, even though there were some challenges along the way.

May your hearts continue to be filled with uplifting joy and remembrance of a life well lived.

I hope we can stay in touch often, that you will be able to visit me in Lake County, and that I can help you in any way in the future.

I love you dearly, always,

Taira (Aunt Taira) St. John

I was this 10 year old kid from Arkadelphia, Arkansas and grew up on the "other side of the tracks" The year was 1940 and we had a new girl in our class by the name of Margaret Day, who I later found out was the daughter of the new President of Henderson, Joseph A. Day. It was obvious that she was a special individual who saw value in every life with whom she came in contact. Margaret was pretty, had lots of personality, was smart as she could be, and she treated everyone with respect. When she moved away after 3 years or so, I felt very sad to see her go. During college days, she returned to Henderson where I also attended. During this time she was an accomplished young lady, who was an inspiration to everyone and she certainly was to me. Although our paths crossed only a few times after that, I have always thought of her as a friend who knew what was important in life. Her love for her family and friends was testimony to that.

Margaret will be missed so much by so many people. My most heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family.

I was a student of Mrs. Martin's at ASB; I graduated in 1986. I will have to say that she was my absolute favorite teacher and she made the greatest impact on my education. As a parent, I find myself correcting my kids grammar constantly and my husband calls me the English Professor. I owe it all to her. I know lots of her students kept in contact with her through the years and she will be greatly missed. She was always a pleasure to talk to and had many words of encouragement. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers in this time of great loss.v

Having known Meg for the past 2 to 3 years in
the pool class and hearing her speak of her
family so many times it is apparent that the
words above are so true.
It was a shock to everyone having attended the
pool class with her on last Wednesday and Friday.
We will all miss her smiling face and presence.
