Biography: Jane Lee Bankson Smith died peacefully on Saturday, August 1 surrounded by her family. She was born on October 18, 1925, the daughter of Robert L Bankson and Florence Fitzgibbons Bankson. She graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1947 where she was a member of Phi Beta Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Jane Lee married Dr. Norman K. Smith on May 15, 1948 and moved to Pocahontas, Arkansas, where he began a medical practice and she began raising a family. They moved to Little Rock after his retirement in 1985 and enjoyed many happy years together. Jane Lee will be remembered first and foremost as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Raley, and her husband Steve and their daughter Robin of Little Rock, and by her son Norman Keith Smith, Jr., and his wife Ann and her daughter Allison Abdias of Brownwood, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of sixty years. As a mother she was the cornerstone of the family and always told her family how much she loved them. She was a modest person who was always ready to help and her kindness touched so many lives. Jane Lee was a devoted member of Second Presbyterian Church, Chapter AZ of PEO, the Aesthetic Club and the Country Club of Little Rock. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009 at Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 4, at 11:00 a.m. following a private burial service. The family will greet friends afterwards at a reception in the church’s Second Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 7328, Little Rock, AR 72217, Second Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank her caregivers who helped to make her last days so comfortable. Melinda, thank you for sharing your Mother with me on many, many amazing occasions. Watching her eat crab cakes on Le Train Bleau at Bloomingdale's is a favorite!!! XXXOO.
