Biography: Henry Luther Eugene Vix of Little Rock, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 20, 1912 to Henry Eugene Ralph Vix and Christine Spengler Vix with two sisters, Dorothy C. Vix and Authemise Vix Hopkins, all deceased. He attended St. John Lutheran School and Warren Easton Boys High School where he graduated with honors and was awarded with a full scholarship to Tulane University. Four years later he graduated with honors and a degree in Chemical Engineering. Though it was the depression, Henry was fortunate to find employment in the brewery industry and after time was written up as the youngest brew master in America. To aid in the war effort, Henry was given a position within the United States Department of Agriculture of the Southern Regional Research Laboratory with the charge to find a way to make synthetic rubber. Working long hours with his team members, he helped to achieve their goal. He did take a few days off in September of 1942 to marry Dorothy Eckert. Since there was no Lutheran Church in Metairie, Louisiana where they lived, in 1945 Henry and a few other men organized Mt. Olive Lutheran Church (LCMS.) Henry worked on the original steering committee and over the years held every office in the congregation. At the lab, Henry not only enjoyed the challenge of guiding the research work of a large number of technicians, but also worked closely with various industries, equipment manufacturers and institutions who were interested in research of southern farm products. He eventually rose to Chief of the Engineering and Development Lab until his retirement. He retired with 13 patents and over 100 publications in various technical and trade journals. After his retirement he accepted an assignment to Israel to set up an oil-seed processing plant. He was there during the time of the Yum Kippur War. In September, 1987, the family moved to Little Rock and joined Christ Lutheran Church where Henry served as Elder and was an active member of the Prime Timers. He has also spent his recent years working on projects to aid Christian education at both Christ Lutheran School and High School. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Karen Pingel and her husband Galen Pingel of Little Rock. Kerry Vix and his wife Peggy of Atascadero, California, and four grandchildren, Christopher Vix, Michael Vix, Beth Lovins and her husband Ben, Everett Ellis and his wife Ginny. Three great grandchildren, Ashley and Amy Lovins and Camryn Ellis and a grand step-son Jon Pingel and his wife Beth and their children. A visitation will be held Sunday from 3-5:00 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 5 at Christ Lutheran Church with the Reverend Donald Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church and School 315 S/ Hughes, Little Rock, 72205, Lutheran High School,6711 W.Markham Little Rock 72205 or Mt. Olive Lutheran Church,316 Ridge Lake Metarie, Louisiana 70001. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com

Henry Vix was one of the finest men that we have had the pleasure of knowing. Thirteen years ago, as a black family moving into the neighborhood, Henry and his family greeted us with a heartfelt sincerity. Over the years, Henry and I(John) became the best of friends. I(John) often sought out Henry for his wisdom and advice. As we consider life's issues we will always remember his advice, "Yard by yard life is hard, but inch by inch life's a cinch". We truly can say that we have been blessed to have Henry as a neighbor and honored to call him a friend.
