Born on Oct. 31, 1959, in Little Rock, Anne was the beloved daughter of Nancy Hall Bailey, who preceded her in death, and her father R. Robert Bailey and wonderful step-mother Elsie Weaver Bailey. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents; C. G. "Crip" Hall (former Arkansas Secretary Of State), Nancy Johnson Hall (former State Treasurer), Carl Edward Bailey (former Governor of Arkansas) and Margaret Bristol Bailey. Other family members who preceded her are uncles and aunts, Carl E. Bailey, Jr., Frank A. Bailey (Warine and Dottie), R. Eugene Bailey (Dot), Alfred B. Bailey, Sherbert Benton of Conway and Harry Bristol. Cousins who died too soon are Blake Benton of Conway, Gene Bailey, Jr. of Little Rock and Nancy Wood of Little Rock. Surviving Anne, besides her father, are her beloved brother Ric and his wife Lori of Little Rock; aunt, Elizabeth Benton of Conway and Grace Bristol of Kerrville, TX; cousins, Sharon Lessenberry and Mark Benton (Virginia) of Conway, Christy Chilcott of Las Vegas, Frank Bailey, Jr. (Paula) of Centennial, CO., Mary Lamb of Little Rock, Kathleen O'Connor (Pat) of Little Rock and Becky Wagner (Mark) of Little Rock. Also surviving Anne are her step-sister, Leslie Karen Golden (Gary) of Little Rock and step-brothers, Carl Williams (Susan) of West Fork and Michael Bliss of Lodi, CA. Ann started "school" at age two at the Anthony School, and finished Hall High in 1977. Along the way she attended Williams, Forrest Heights, Booker and Mount St. Mary's. Her year at St. Mary's was to play softball and volley ball in the church league. Her first college was at Birmingham Southern in Alabama where she completed the requirements for a degree in chemistry. After a while working in the medical field she returned to college and earned a B. A. in English at the University of Alabama Birmingham in 1986, a M.A. in English also at UAB in 1988 and finally her PhD in English in 1994 at the University of Southern Mississippi. She was an outstanding writer and shared in writing two books and had a number of articles and reviews published. Though very diverse in her scholastic interests her primary field was seventeenth century British literature. Her college teaching positions included UA Birmingham, Jefferson State Junior College, Samford University, University of Southern Mississippi, Southeastern Louisiana University, King's College in London, England, UT Chattanooga and finally, in her final illness, as an adjunct professor at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock. Among her cherished memories was growing up with many friends on North Bryan St. in Little Rock. Her constant companions through her many moves were her two dogs, Jesse and Zack. She specified that their ashes be buried with her. And, at her request, she will be buried beside her grandparents C. G. "Crip” Hall and Nancy Johnson Hall. Anne expressed her special gratitude to her special friend and physician, Dr. Jay Holland. A Graveside service will be at Roselawn Memorial Park at 10 a.m., Saturday July 11, 2009, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, officiated by Dr. Rev. Karen Akin. I wonder what happened to my comments on Anne. It appears they were deleted. Her life is better described at http://annehallbailey.blogspot.com/

Dr. Bailey was a brilliant academic, a committed teacher, and a kind, loving woman. She always made extra time for her students and took a personal interest in their academic and professional development. She was the kind of teacher that one experiences only once in a life time.

I can safely and confidently say that I have never met anyone like Anne in all of my journeys. My years at Birmingham Southern will be forever dusted with meories of Anne and her unquenchable zest for life. It is of some comfort that she is now at peace. She will be missed by many.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Anne's death. She was a great friend throughout my childhood days at school and at Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church where my father, Bill McLean was minister. We shared great times, laughter and mischief together.
It has been years since I saw Ric and Bob but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.
Peace,

Bob,
I was so saddened to hear this news. Anne was a wonderful friend to Ken and to me when she lived in Chattanooga, and I was looking forward to visiting her this fall; she sounded so upbeat the last time we spoke. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this terrible time.

Not knowing why God chose that Anne would enter our life, we know only how deeply she has graced those of us who have viewed her beauty. Her strength, humility, graciousness, and never quit spirit both humbled, and encouraged, those around her. Her ever present faith in the innate goodness of others reflected from an uncommon pool of spirit within her. She chose only to see 'the best', and in so doing gently coaxed the possibilities she saw into being. Her 'lessons' weren't confined to the classroom, but were a wonderful, and already dearly missed, gift. Thank you for sharing your daughter and sister with us, the ones who came to know, love, and respect Anne as a most precious friend. In these times, we were blessed and look forward now to the day when our all merciful Creator will reunite His children. We carry with us the quiet strength, grace and certainty we remember and cherish as Anne.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Anne's death.

Anne was a dear friend and will be deeply missed. She always had a smile and inspired all she met with her words. I took care of Anne as a patient (many years ago), and we became friends after she discharged. Her strength inspired me, and so many others.

I will never forget the spiral notebook and pen she would always be jotting on (this was years before her laptop). Anne was always brewing with new ideas and needed to write them down so she wouldn't forget them. You could go to Anne with anything, and she could work you thru to a solution. She was so knowledgeable.

I know how difficult this must be for you. May God bless you and your family during this difficult time and always. You are in my prayers.

Dr. Bailey was one of the most influential professors I ever had in college. She recognized and demanded the best out of me as a student no matter what the assignment may have been. It is because of her that I decided to go into teaching English and continue to love the subject matter. She helped me to love and enjoy the written word in way few other have. I am so sorry to hear of her untimely death. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

What a wonderful person for this world to loose.
As children, Anne and I were in the same Sunday school class and sat many a Sunday together in the balcony of Pulaski Heights Presbyterian for church services. Anne was a remarkable person and a true friend. Through our precious Lord, may her family find peace and comfort at this time.

I was totally shocked and saddened to hear of Anne's passing. I met Anne at Burger King when we were teenagers, and dated her for a short while. I was just thinking of her a few days ago, wondering what she was up to. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May she rest in peace, in the perpetual light of Christ.

Anne was my dance partner at Cotillion in the 6th grade. We graduated Hall High together in 1977. What a shame to lose such a talented and caring person so young in life. May God bless her and accept her into His kingdom and keep her family in His grace now and forever.

Living next door to Anne and her family on Bryan Street was a great joy. Our son John and she had many imaginative games with other neighborhood children. I have observed her career from a distance and am proud of her accomplishments. Her untimely death is a shock. My condolences to Ric, Bob, and all her family.

My family lived across the street from Anne on Bryan Street. Anne was part of our neighborhood crowd which back then was teaming with kids all in roughly the same age range. I remember hanging out in her basement, and the wonderful brithday parties she had. Anne was always a good sport playing street football or hide and go seek on long summers evenings. Although I moved away from Little Rock long ago, I have very fond memories of Anne, and was very sad to learn of her untimely death. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
