Biography: Wanda Gibson Wimberley, 85, of Little Rock, went to be with the Lord on May 20, 2009 after a long illness with Multiple Myeloma Cancer. Wanda had an amazing positive spirit and attitude during her battle with cancer. Wanda was born at home in Eureka Springs, Arkansas on March 3, 1924 to the late Katherine S. and Lloyd C. Gibson. Her childhood years were spent growing up in Green Forest, Arkansas. Wanda graduated with a Master’s degree in History from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1948. The U of A in Fayetteville is also where she met her late husband Robert J. (Bob) Wimberley. Bob and Wanda were married in 1948 in Fayetteville, Arkansas and enjoyed fifty-nine years of friendship and marriage before Bob passed away from a stroke on December 22, 2007. Wanda had an incredible zest for life and loved others. Even as her cancer progressed she didn’t focus on herself but would ask her visitors about themselves. Wanda taught American history at Parkview High School in Little Rock from 1969 until 1984. Wanda loved History, teaching, reading and traveling. Wanda was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Winfield United Methodist Church for over sixty years. She is survived by her two daughters; Candace Wimberley and Laurie Wimberley Hill, Two grandchildren; Wesley Hill and Rachel Hill all of Little Rock, a brother; Worth Gibson of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks and appreciation is given to Vanessa Lewis her faithful caregiver of over two years and to her social worker Jackie Keiser and the many wonderful doctors, nurses and workers at Arkansas Hospice. We met Bob through our work for the Arkansas Press Association, and got to know Wanda through gatherings of ASAE over the 25 years were were at APA. She was a special lady and will be remembered as a warm and caring person with a gentle humor and catching smile.
