Biography: Paul Andrew McCay, 66, of Little Rock, died April 18, 2009. He was born in Monticello, AR and at age one moved with his family to Crossett, AR. He took great pride in being a product of that town and was a 1960 graduate of Crossett High. Paul was the youngest child of the late Ethel Mae and Robert McCay, and was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby. He is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Nancy Hamlin; siblings, Samuel Gene McCay (Betty), George McCay (Ruth), Mary Pendergrass Terrell all of Crossett, AR and David McCay (Rhonda) of Longmont, Colorado; brother-in-law, Frank Hamlin (Betty Lou) of Little Rock as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Paul was a graduate of the U of A at Monticello and received his Master’s Degree in Education from the U of A at Fayetteville. He taught high school in Hamburg, AR until 1972. He then began another career in Juvenile Justice and worked for Delta Counseling and the Pulaski County Juvenile Court. He was last employed at Little Rock Community Mental Health. Paul had a passion for traveling; he enjoyed Arkansas’ beauty and traveled its roads regularly with his wife. He was an avid reader when it came to Arkansas and politics. His intelligent wit was shared with many and will be missed. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service on Friday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Crossett. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Paul was a good person. Kim was also sad when I called her. I didn't get to know Paul like I knew you but always heard good things about him. I know you'll miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. McCay was my teacher when he was in Hamburg. He also lived beside me when I was growing up in Hamburg. He was a nice man and a great teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

To the McKay family. I am sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers.I am a former student of Mr. McKay while he taught at HHS.I was a very shy student and he made such an impact on my life.He taught me how to over come the fear of not being accepted by other people.I will never forget him and the wisdom he shared with all of us back then.
He once said that being a teacher was much like being a preacher, I have found that to be very true.
God bless you all in this sad time.

I wish I had known Paul was in Little Rock, and I wish I had met you, Nancy. Paul and I graduated from Crossett High School in the same class. We sang in Pat Lowrance's Madrigal Singers for three years, and I was part of the backstage crew when Paul brilliantly played a lead role of Algernon Moncrief in The Importance of Being Ernest. The group that worked on that play became a coterie built around our Spanish and journalism teacher Marty Davis (later at UofA)and her friend JoAnn Reynolds, who worked at the News Observer. We called ourselves the Sons of Bunberry (SOBs, thought of ourselves as very smart and sophisticated and had many little inside jokes among ourselves.
Paul and I were great sparring conversationalists, and I'm glad to see that he kept his wit razor-sharp. I always thought he was brilliant, and I'm glad to see what kind of work he ended up doing, which shows a compassion that was well-guarded when I knew him.
My parents moved to Parkway Village in Little Rock in 2000, and so I have been there often. My father is still alive. Paul, so far as I know, never came back for class reunions, and so we lost touch. But I felt a great loss at hearing of his death. And I offer my heartfelt sympathies to all of you who have been close to him through the years. Best, Janna Tull Steed

Dear Nancy,

I was very sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I know how much you and Paul were a true 'couple.' I did not have the pleasure of knowing Paul very well, but very much enjoyed hearing you speak of him often regarding his 'take' on things, his love of traveling and reading. I know he will be missed by all. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss.

Your friend always,
Judy

Dearest Nancy:
Paul was such a fine person. An intelligent mind like his was a real blessing as well as his concerns for children and society, and his knowledge and love for travel. fondly, Hazel

Nancy,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how close you and Paul were and how much you enjoyed each other's company. I remember your telling me how patient he was when you were shopping while on vacation. I know that you have lots of wonderful memories. I have known Paul for a long time, back to the days when we were at Delta Counseling. He was always witty, humorous and polite.
Take care of yourself. That's what he would want you to do.

Nancy,
I am so sorry for your loss. Being married to someone for such a long time surely makes it that much harder to cope with. You two were great together. Take good care of yourself.
God Bless You,
Carolyn

Nancy, I just found out that Paul had been sick and died. I am so sorry for your losing him. He was very smart, witty and I could always see he adored you when I was with you two together. I am sure your speciality of traveling Arkansas was always fun with a history scholar.
