Biography: Dr. Robert L. “R.L.” Smith, Jr., age 85, of Fayetteville, Arkansas passed away March 13, 2009 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, Arkansas.He was born on March 22, 1923 to R.L. Smith, Sr., and Lillian Elva DeJarnatt Smith. Although born in Marion, Arkansas he grew up in Eureka Springs and called that home. R.L. graduated from the University of Arkansas and the St. Louis School of Dentistry. After graduating, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Army before opening a dental practice in Little Rock. R.L. was an active leader in the Arkansas State Dental Association. He was founder and first president of both the Pulaski County Dental Society and the Arkansas Society of Dentistry for Children. He was honored by being honored awarded life memberships in both the A.S.D.A. and the American Dental Association. He served six years on the ASDA’s Executive Council and in 1975 was elected editor of the Arkansas Dental Journal, which he held for 15 years. R.L. holds fellowships of the International College of Dentists and was named Master Fellows of the ICD. He became editor of the ICD Key in 1990 and served in that capacity for 13 years. After 28 years of editing the ASDA journal and the ICD journal, he retired from journalism and received the distinctive honor of being named editor Emeritus with ICD. R.L. is predeceased by his wife Jean and survived by children; Stephen L. Smith and wife Sheryl, of Houston ,Texas, Cynthia Smith Nicoll and husband Steve of Guntersville, Alabama, Douglas R. Smith and wife Diana of Springdale, Arkansas, and David C. Smith and wife Nancy of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and 6 grandchildren. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 PM Monday at Ruebel Funeral Home, in Little Rock, followed by a memorial service at Trinity Presbyterian Church Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 11 AM. It is a true loss to hear of the passing of your father. It seems that in ltttle less than a year we have lost both uncles and fathers. Tride and true memories will alwasy be with us. He was always quick with that smile of his and a pat on the back whether we needed it or not. He will never be forgotten.
