Biography: Dr. William Thompson Dungan died on March 8, 2009. He was born in Little Rock on June 12, 1930, the son of W.T. Dungan and Frances (Rose) Dungan. Dr. Dungan attended Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt School of Medicine and served a Residency in Pediatrics at Vanderbilt Hospital and a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Chicago Clinics. After serving in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps, where he was the Chief of Pediatrics at the USAF Hospital at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, he joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. At the time of his death, Dr. Dungan was Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Dungan served as Medical Director and Chief of Staff at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, President of the Central Pediatric Society, the Arkansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Arkansas Affiliate of the American Heart Association. He was a past Board member of the Pulaski County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Little Rock Board of Health, and the Museum of Science and Natural History. He was a member of the Country Club of Little Rock, serving as President in 1984. Dr. Dungan received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine in 1997, and he was inducted into the UAMS Hall of Fame in 2004. Dr. Dungan was an honoree of the Arkansas Heart Association and the Visiting Nurses Association. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies. He was the author or co-author of over 50 articles in the medical literature. Dr. Dungan was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry on four occasions and as Senior Warden for three Rectors. Dr. Dungan is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Gibbs Dungan, daughters Gail Dungan Dore and husband Jeff of Atlanta and Susan Dungan Butler and husband Steve of Benton, and four grandchildren: Justin Ray Tarkington, William Seth Tarkington, Rebecca Ansley Dore, and Robert Thompson Dore. He is also survived by his sister, Leah Dungan Keith of Little Rock, and her family. Funeral services will be at 1:00 Thursday, March 12 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, with interment in St. Mark’s Columbarium. The family extends its gratitude to the caring staffs of UAMS and Hospice Home Care.
