Biography: Boyd R. Haley, 86, of Little Rock went to be with the Lord February 18, 2009. He was born November 25, 1922, in Independence, Oregon. Boyd is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Haley and his mother, Ivell Haley both of Little Rock; two daughters, Dianna Wilson and her husband Stan of Maumelle and Heather Smith and her husband Wayne of Cabot; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Smith, Marty Smith, Eric Wilson and Emily Piechocki and her husband Evan. Boyd served his country as a Lieutenant in the Navy, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was out at sea the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and arrived the next day for rescue and recovery operations. He was recalled to the Navy six years later to serve his country again in the Korean War. Boyd graduated from Princeton University in 1948, and began working as a geologist mapping coal in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania. He was an excellent cartographer and once was one of the country’s foremost experts on Lignite Coal. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for 40 years, serving in Pennsylvania, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Denver, Colorado. He moved to Arkansas in 1968 where he was assigned the task of producing a geological map of the state of Arkansas. He and the team of geologist he led finished the map in 1976, and it is still the official geological map of Arkansas. Previously the state had not been mapped since the early 1900’s. After his retirement in 1982, he served as a volunteer at the Arkansas Geological Survey until his death, and lent them his expertise on cartography and rock identification. Boyd was a member of the Masonic Order for 50 years, and was a member of the Pulaski Heights Masonic Lodge #673. He was a member of the Scimitar Shrine and a member of Second Presbyterian Church for many years. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, at Ruebel Funeral Home, and Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, at Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, officiated by Rev. Dr. Karen Akin. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
