Biography: Stephen Harrow Smith of Little Rock, died January 10, 2009. Mr. Smith was born January 19, 1911 and Little Rock has always been his home. He was the son of J. Rudy Smith from Henderson, KY and Grace Harrow Smith from Ottumwa, Iowa. He attended Woodberry Forest Prep School and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a B.S. degree in Economics. In 1933 he returned to Little Rock and followed his main interest, investments. He worked for three small investment companies until 1942 after World War II broke out. After graduating from OCS he was stationed at Wilmington Delaware Air Base, the home of the Ferrying Division of the Air Transport Command as an administrative officer. Later he was transferred to an air base in Greenwood, Mississippi. While there in August of 1945 he married Kathryn “K.C.” Smith, daughter of William Clark Chamberlin and Josephine Ahrens Chamberlin of Little Rock. After the war was over, he worked for Walter R. Bass Investments until 1957 when Mr. Bass died. Mr. Smith bought the firm and for thirty years operated Harrow Smith Company and retired in 1987. During his working years he had short stints on the boards of the Visiting Nurses’ Association, the local Red Cross Board, and the Metropolitan YMCA. In addition, he served twenty-five years on the Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery Board. He was a member of Belcher Lake Farms Hunting and Fishing Club and Lakeside Country Club as well as the Country Club of Little Rock where he served as president in 1954 and a board member for several years. At this time he probably was the last of the second-generation members, his father having been a charter member. Needless to say, he was an avid golfer taking his first golf lesson at age 14. He was a board member of “Home Theaters” which developed TV cable systems in several towns in Texas, two of which were at College Station and Austin. Mr. Smith was a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church. Since 1936 he has spent part of his summers in the small village of Cape Porpoise, Maine, where his mother had acquired a large home on the coast. He and his sister’s family share the house. He and K.C. have enjoyed entertaining many friends from Little Rock in Maine. He was predeceased by his daughter, Josephine Smith born August 1947 and his sister and brother-in-law, Natalie and Odell W. Henson. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn “K.C.” Smith. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, AR 72227 or to a favorite charily. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. K.C. I am so sorry to hear about Harrow. I will always remember him as a very kind man. I will miss seeing him reading the Wall Street Journal and hearing his dry witty remarks. I hope you take comfort in your family and friends in this time. You will be in our prayers.

Love, Don Leslie and Sloane Nutt

K.C. and family, we were sad to hear of Harrow's death and wish to offer our prayers, love and condolences to you and the family. We enjoyed one of Harrow's famous Lobster Dinners at your Cape Porpoise, Maine home once as guests of you, Harrow and Josie. We remember that night as a very special event presented by a most gracious host and hostesses, and will treasure it among our special memories. Harrow was a very gracious Southern Gentleman in every way. May God bless and keep you safely in his hands.

Our love, prayers and gratitude, Harland & Marlene
