Biography: Mary Bess Malone Lankford of Maumelle, Arkansas died December 3, 2008 at age 69. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 28, 1939. Bess spent her childhood years in Camden and Clarendon, Arkansas. Becoming a national baton twirling phenomenon at age six, “The Little Drum Major” toured around the country with her parents to perform and was invited to be a celebrity guest on national late night television shows in New York. She later attended Mary Baldwin College in Virginia and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where she was a Pi Beta Phi and became friends with her future soul mate, Dick Lankford. Her creative juices flowing and sense of adventure churning, she started playing the ad game in Dallas, Texas and went on to become Publicity Director for the prestigious Princess Hotel in Bermuda. Upon her return to the United States, Bess continued her career in advertising at Cranford Johnson. In 1969, the two-ring circus was underway, when Bess married Dickie. The circus got bigger when Bess gave birth to Malone and Jack, giving them unconditional love and encouragement throughout their lives. In 1976, Lankford, Ink. was born, and Dickie and Bess happily launched creative campaigns for clients that will never be forgotten. With sand in their shoes, Bess and Dickie took yearly trips to the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama with their children, Malone and Jack. Although never one to take credit for her contributions, Bess was a co-author and the driving force behind numerous published cookbooks with her mother, Ruth Malone, including their latest, the Arkansas Classic Country Cookbook. In 2000, with sand still in their shoes, Driftwood Villa in the Cayman Islands became Bess and Dickie’s home away from home for the next three years. As he personally explained in his obituary, Dickie headed back to the beach in 2005 to wait for Bess. Beach chairs beside each other, Dickie’s wait is over as Bess joins him for beach patrol and eternal happiness. Bess was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Jordan Lankford of 36 years and her parents, Ruth Moore Malone and Charles E. Malone. She is survived by her daughter, Malone Moore Lankford of Dallas, TX, her son, Jack Jordan Lankford, Jack’s wife, Meg, and their two children, Jackson and Mary Margaret, all of Little Rock. Bess is also survived by her sister, Margaret Malone de Marcy of France. A private service was held at Ruebel Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Margaret ...

I am so sorry to hear about Bess. She was such a lovely person way back when, much like her older sister, and she made a baton become a magical instrument.
Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time, and I still think of you often and the times we had together in David Jones's 11th Grade English class.
Just know I care.

God bless Bess. In earlier days we shared "The Small House" in Bermuda as we worked and played on that tiny island. Her wonderful sense of humor and her spontaneous habit of inviting spur-of-the-moment dinner guests, was such a fun challenge, which we met and enjoyed - yes, those were youthful days! Our lives went different ways but we never lost contact...until now. Bess, be at peace. We'll meet again ~love Dorothy

Jack and Malone,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's passing. As you know I was in high school with her for a year and got to get reacquainted with her and doing business with your father: two wonderful people to know and to work with.

Dear Family members..she was a wonderful person and it was a priviledge to know her. I was one year behind her in school and got to see a lot of her drum major activites. She was shy in High School, but once she knew you you could not have asked for a sweeter kinder person to have as a friend...My prayer is that God will put His loving arms around all members of the Lankford family and give the strenght duing this time of loss and heartache.

I am a 1957 graduate of Camden High School and was a classmate of Bess. She was admired for her many talents. Her presence at our 50th Class Reunion was enjoyed and we are grateful for the class pictures taken at that time with Bess being a participate. Our prayers and thoughts are with her family at this time.

Dear Malone, Jack, and Meg,

I am spending the day reminiscing about Dickie and Bess and remembering the happy times we had in the Village. It's wonderful to have such a close-knit family, but it makes the loss doubly hard. Please know that Katey and I are always available if you need us for anything. We are thinking about you and we love you.
