Biography: Joseph Anthony Scerbo, age 63, of Little Rock, died Thursday, October 23, 2008. Joe was born in Boonton, New Jersey to the late Anna Aloi and Joseph Anthony Scerbo. Joe graduated from Dickinson High School, Jersey City, New Jersey, where he also continued working for his father in the family floral business. He was married to Judith Buchanan of Jersey City, New Jersey. They later moved to Little Rock where they settled to raise a family. He worked for Friday’s Florist from 1969 to 1977 when he created Joseph’s Florist, becoming one of Little Rock’s well known florists. He sold Joseph’s in 1989 and later worked with the City of Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department, Horticultural Division. Joe was a 36 plus years member of Good Counsel Catholic Church where he, as an expert woodworker, built several items for the church. Besides his ability to fix anything, Big Daddy, as he was called by his grandchildren, loved his vegetable and flower gardens, John Wayne movies and was well known for his knowledge of trivial information. Joe, Big Daddy, had a wonderful sense of humor and was happy making others happy. The family would like to thank Dr. Brad P. Blatz and his staff for their wonderful care. Joe is survived by his wife Judith “Judi” Buchanan Scerbo of Little Rock, one daughter Gina Bilger and husband John and their children, Jack, Ellie Joseph all of Little Rock, two brothers; Fred Scerbo and wife Patricia of Brick, New Jersey, Frank Scerbo and wife Susan of Birmingham, Michigan, six nieces; Denise Zemanovich (Gary), Gerilyn Aspres (Anthony), Lori Colosimo (Kevin), Heidi Iversen (Michael), Jenny Fehr (Scott), Holly Scerbo, two nephews; James and Joseph Jordan Scerbo, many great-neices and nephews, and special family Denise and Andy Caldwell and sons; Phillip and Adam. There will be a visitation Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 5p.m. at the Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. officiated by Reverend Jack Vu and Reverend Richard Zawadzki. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel, 1321 South Van Buren Street, Little Rock, AR. 72204 or Saint Vincent Oncology Department, 6101 St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, AR 72205.

Dear Scerbo Family,

I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I worked with Joe a few times through the city when Parks and Rec graciously put up our Christmas wreaths, flags and banners for the Quapaw Quarter neighborhood. He paid such attention to detail and always had a smile on his face - it was a pleasure just to be in his presence - I wish I had been able to know him better, he must have been quite a character from what I have read! I heard someone just the other day at Curran Hall lamenting "when Joe was here that was always taken care of..." Joe looked out for us and made us laugh while he did.

I know we will all be with Joe, again, in heaven with Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit.

Heartfelt condolences,
Amber Jones

Dear Scerbo family,

I happened upon Joe's obituary while looking up another one. I am so very sorry to hear about your loss of Joe. In reading the comments written by others regarding his smile, I must say that his smile is what I seem to remember most about him during the days at Joel's, and how very proud he was of Gina. Our sincerest sympathy goes out to you. We pray that some day no one will have to suffer from the pain of cancer.

Dear Judi, Gina, John & Family,

We are so sorry to hear about the news of Joe's passing. Words cannot express how sad we are to hear this news.

There are so many wonderful Scerbo-Aloi Florist memories with Joey. He made everyone feel so special and put a smile on everyone's face who he came in contact with.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I had known Joe since the 1980's when I worked for Capitol Wholesale Florists long before I ever came to work for the City of Little Rock. I was always amazed by his talent and craftsmanship when I would go by the shop on Durwood. I remember when he was building a pagoda for a customer in Pleasant Valley and how he was wetting and bending the wood to make the pieces curve. Later when he came to work for Parks we once again joked and laughed about everything every time we met. Joe and I had several private jokes we always shared that resulted in both of us laughing. Again this year I have lost another good friend. Rest in peace Joe.

Dear Judy and Gina:
During the time that I worked for Joe he taught me more about being a success than any school ever could.
He taught me that as long as you don't limit yourself, life's possibilities are endless.
Sorely missed, never forgotten.
Clan Campbell sends our heartfelt condolences to you.

after my father passed when I was 12, there were 3 men than were my surrogate fathers. Fred Tubbs, George Tribou and Joe Scerbo. He was there for me for years. I would not be the man I am today or the father I am without Joe, Judy and Gina.

A person is only gone when others don't carry their spirit. Not the situation with Joe.

Much love,

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. I am sorry that I cannot be with you at this time. But know that I am there in spirit with you. Judi, I love you very much and you know that my prayers are with you. Maybe when you get time we can get together in Jonesboro for a great big and long hug.
Know that Joe will always be dear to my heart and always in my prayers.

May God bless you

I worked with Joe in Parks and Recreation for almost four (4) years and for as long as I have known him I have never seen him without a smile. His caring gestures and friendly disposition will definitely be missed.

I pray for your strength during this difficult time and may God, the maker of all things & ruler of all men, give you peace which passeth all understanding.

With Sympathy,
