Biography: Joseph Davidson Calhoun was born on March 31, 1922 in Rayville, Louisiana to Joseph Davidson Calhoun and Louise Taylor Calhoun. He was married to Anne Goyne Mitchell Calhoun. His first marriage was to Mildred Harrison Calhoun. He was preceded in death by a brother; John Davidson and two sisters; Ada Elizabeth Calhoun Mays and Jean Calhoun Foss. His younger brother William Neil Calhoun lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with his wife Carol. Six children were born to his first marriage: Alice Hornibrook Calhoun Morgan, wife of Chris Morgan of Hickory Creek, Texas, Val Calhoun Halsey, wife of Jack Halsey of Pensacola, Florida; Joseph Davidson Calhoun, husband of Vicki Calhoun of Little Rock; Harrison Neil Calhoun, husband of Renetta Calhoun of Plano, Texas; Graham Gerard Calhoun, of Atlanta, Georgia; and William Allen Calhoun, husband of Karen Calhoun of Portland, Oregon. Grandchildren are: Leslie Morgan Horton of Littleton, Colorado; Hillary Morgan Ferrer of Dallas, Texas, Aime Cathryn Mitchell and Charlotte Anne Mitchell of Raleigh, North Carolina; Anne Taylor Hill and Randolph Bolton Hill of Houston, Texas, John Hill of New York City, and Peter Hill of Palo Alto, California; Daniel Smeraldo of Plano, Texas, Tyler Calhoun, Jessica Calhoun and Christina Calhoun of Portland, Oregon; and Kristi Staley, Page Hadfield and Scott Fraser of Little Rock. He also embraced Anne’s children: Emmett Leon Mitchell, III and his wife, Sandy of Ft. Worth, Texas; and Anne Lynn Hill and her husband, Graham Hill of Houston, Texas. Both his grown children and grandchildren are devoted to Joe. His great grandchildren are Luke and Joey Horton of Littleton, Colorado and Samuel Staley and Ava Hadfield of Little Rock, AR. Following graduation from Ruston High School, he enrolled in Tulane University from 1939 until 1945, completing BS degree and MD degrees. He had enrolled at Tulane on September 1, 1939, the day that Hilter invaded Poland and graduated from medical school on August 14, 1945, VJ Day. On graduation he was commissioned Lieutenant, Jr. Grade in the U.S. Naval Reserves Medical Corps. He spent one year of internship at the Southern Pacific General Hospital in San Francisco, then returned to New Orleans to become an instructor in gross anatomy. After two months at Tulane the U.S. Naval Reserve sent him to active duty at the Arkansas Veteran’s Hospital in North Little Rock. While at the VA Hospital, he combined his work with a residency in Radiology under Dr. I. Meschen at the University of Arkansas Medical School, completing his residency in June of 1950. He was the first resident in Radiology at UAMS; took his board examinations in 1950 and was accredited as a member of the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Calhoun was a member of the Arkansas Medical Society, President of the Pulaski County Medical Society in 1950, and served on the staff of St. Vincent’s Infirmary, Arkansas Baptist Hospital, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and Doctor’s Hospital. At SVI, he was Director of Radiology from 1953-1956, and Chief of the Medical Staff from 1985-1987. At Arkansas Children’s Hospital, he was Director of the Department of Radiology from 1950-1977, Chief of the Medical Staff from1976-1979, and a member of the Board of Directors from 1976-1979. He was a Clinical Professor of Radiology at UAMS from 1950 until his retirement. On the national level, he became a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1957, and served as Chairman of the Board of Chancellors in 1977; was elected President of the College in 1978. He was awarded the ACR Gold Medal for “Service to Radiology” in 1979. He held membership with the American Roentgen Ray Society, serving it as President in 1980, and received the ARRS Gold Medal for “Distinguished Service” in 1995. He also belonged to the Radiological Society of North America, The Eastern Radiological Society, The Society of Pediatric Radiology, The Senior Radiology Society, and is an honorary member of the Arkansas Orthopedic Society. He served for six years on the board of Chancellors of the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospitals. Following study at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, Dr. Calhoun introduced Mammography to Arkansas in 1970. He also learned the Lymphangiogram procedure at M.D. Anderson. He was qualified as a “B” Reader to evaluate x-ray findings in determining patients’ exposure to asbestos. Over the years he enjoyed tennis, golf, hunting, fishing, woodworking, photography and flying his own airplane. He was a dear and good man. His family was devoted to him and will miss him dearly. Taylor, Dr. Jim Cross, Dr. Thorpe Gillespie, Dr. George Norton, Dr. Alvah Nelson, Dr. Jim Campbell, Dr. Jim Morse, Dr.Tom Jansen and Doug Smith. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with Rev. Canon Rhea Ewing Jackson officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ruston, Louisiana.
