Biography: James Wm. Spears, age 74, of Little Rock, died at home early Sunday morning, September 7, 2008. He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Susanne, and his sister, Sue Wilson of Emporia, Kansas. Jim was born on July 21, 1934 in Jasper, Arkansas to James Franklin and Constance Cooper Spears. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Guy Moore. He graduated from Jasper Public School in 1948, and then began attending Arkansas Tech at Russellville. He transferred to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he joined the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity in 1956 and graduated in 1958 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. He then returned to Jasper where he worked for several years in his uncle’s abstract office. Jim was the grandson, nephew and husband of lawyers. He returned to Fayetteville and entered the Arkansas Law School from which he graduated first in his class, received a Bachelor of Laws in 1964 and a Juris Doctor in 1969. He earned a Master of Laws in 1972 from the University of Texas in Austin. Jim began his law practice in Harrison in 1964 at the firm of Walker, Villines, and Spears, but in 1965 he accepted a position as assistant professor at the Fayetteville Law School. He transferred to the new Little Rock division in 1966, remained through the school’s transition to UALR in 1975, and retired from teaching at the beginning of 2003. In 1976, Jim received UALR’s outstanding teaching award. He served in the 1971 Arkansas Constitution Convention, and he observed his 50th year as a 32nd degree Mason this year. A memorial service will be conducted by Rabbi Eugene Levy of congregation B’nai Israel at Ruebel Funeral Home, 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 10. Memorials may be made to Feline Rescue and Rehome (FURR), P.O. Box 250567, Little Rock, AR 72225. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. Jim Spears was an extremely kind man who loved the law and his students. Like several generations of Arkansas lawyers, I was privileged to be in his Civil Procedure class and was so impressed, I -- likely along with others -- later nominated him for the outstanding teacher award, which deservedly won.

Self deprecating with a razor sharp wit and humble manner, I treasure my memories of him.

How very sad to learn of the passing of such a good man. Professor Sears was an important part of my legal education. His wise words and strong example will long be remembered by the hundreds and hundreds of students who were lucky enough to have be guided by his hand.
Some people spend a lifetime working to have their name immortalized in stone - the name Jim Spears will be recalled (and treasured) in the hearts of those who respected and loved him.

I took Professor Spears' class in civil procedure in law school and throughly enjoyed the classes, and professor Spears. I will never forget that he told us that the civil procedure class was, for law students, like the mystery hour. We could not understand the law or the cases without knowledge of civil procedure yet in our first year, we did not know enough to make sense out of or to understand civil procedure. He was an excellent teacher and a delightfull and caring professor and person. He will be missed, but he will never be forgotten, and always remembered fondly.
Susanne, our thoughts and prayers are with you as you try to fill the void left by his passing.

Professor Spears was possessed with a kind and gentle spirit that this world needs today more than ever. I enjoyed his classes and the fact that he most likely always gave me better grades than I deserved. My old boss, David Pryor, always said Jim Spears was one of the smartest guys he knew at school. Prof. Spears proved that to me as well. God Bless.

Was so surprised to see Jim in the paper. We are long lost friends of the Wine Club from long ago. It was just a day or two ago, we were on the back porce wondering how he was doing. He was so fun to visit with, and yes, he did want you to think he was shy if you didn't know him. We knew he was very educated, but he always was just one of us at the meetings. He'll be missed dearly by all.

Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Brother Jim Spears, I received an e-mail and two phone calls concerning his passing and his obituary. My brother George called and said he went to Tech with Jim.
Jim is and always will be a Brother in the bonds of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. We say he has passed on to Chapter Eternal.
We will be placing his obituary in our web-site www.hogpikealumni.com and will also inform Pi Kappa Alpha National Headquarters for notice to be placed in the Shield and Diamond Magazine.
We are truly sorry for the passing of Brother Jim;he had a most remarkable, memorable and honorable life.

Mr. Spears was funny and kind and knew his stuff. I took every class he taught, and learned much - including how to throw assorted knives!

What a Life! His effervescent love he had for life - just going head-strong- moving-on to everything HE chose to do, his love for you, Susanne, his animals, his teaching, and telling wonderful stories that made us laugh out loud. I'll never forget fond memories of weiner roasts, the many "birthdays" he shared with you, that "little boy" smile he always had each time we met. He wanted everyone to think he was shy and timid, but he wasn't at all - he was REAL and very much ALIVE in everything he partook. Time flies, but we're grateful to have shared part of our life with Jim. If we can do anything for you, Susanne, please know we're just around the corner.....Luv and hugs!

I had Professor Spears for Civil Procedure my first semester of law school. It was a new, exciting, and sometimes scary time, but he was always very kind, a gentleman and a scholar.
