Biography: Glen L. Williams of Little Rock, who was prominent in the Arkansas savings and loan industry for almost 36 years until his retirement in 1991, died Sept 3, 2008. He was 81 years old. Williams, a native of Hope, was the son of the late Glen L. and Sophia P. Williams and a graduate of Hope High School. He entered the Army Air Corps and served as a sergeant in Japan before returning to resume his education at Hendrix College in Conway, where he received his undergraduate degree in 1950. He then joined the J. C. Penney Co. as a management trainee, moved to the Auto Finance Company as a trainee and served for three years as loan officer before joining First Federal Savings and Loan Company in 1955 as assistant secretary. At First Federal he was the first manager of the Park Plaza branch office, moving up to vice president of the Association. Williams left First Federal in 1965 to become president and chief executive officer of Peoples S and L, where he remained for 17 years. He returned to First Federal as division vice president when it was merged into Peoples S and L in 1983. Williams’ leadership in both civic and professional organizations was extensive. He was a director of Little Rock Unlimited Progress for eight years, a director and president of the Better Business Bureau of Arkansas, a director and president of the Arkansas Savings and Loan League, a member and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Savings and Loan Association of Arkansas, a director of both the Little Rock and Metropolitan Chambers of Commerce, an advisory director of the Little Rock YWCA and a chairman of the YWCA Foundation. In addition in 1978 he served as president of the Arkansas Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1950 and a former treasurer of its Bowen-Cabe Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, served as a justice of the peace of Pulaski County and was a member of the West Little Rock Rotary Club from 1962 to 1969. Survivors include two sons; Glen L. Williams III and Paul Williams, both of Fayetteville. Two sisters; Sophia Bean of Memphis and Nannette Elsass of Fayetteville, and several nieces and nephews. A third sister, Marie A. Tipton, died in 1987. Visitation will be held Friday September 12, 2008 from 5 to 7 pm in Ruebel Funeral Home. A memorial service will be Saturday September 13, 2008 at 10 am in First United Methodist Church. Burial will be that afternoon in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hope, Arkansas.
