Biography: Roberta Summers Barnes of Little Rock passed away September 2, 2008. She is survived by her daughter Betsy Barnes, three grandchildren; J Plunkett and his wife Donna, Maria Troeger and her husband Chris of Little Rock, and Jennifer Reeves of North Carolina, and two great-grand children; Diana Morgan Plunkett, and Conall Alexander Plunkett. Her husband of 50 years C. V. “Cotton” Barnes and daughter Diana Marie Plunkett preceded her in death. Roberta was born in La Junta, Colorado as the forth child of Paul Albert and Grace Morgan Summers. She graduated from Dodge City High School and attended Washburn University where she pledged Alpha Phi sorority. Before marrying she returned to La Junta where she organized the first Girl Scout troop there. In April 1940 she married Cotton Barnes in Oklahoma City, OK and she moved to Little Rock. She began a life time of volunteering and community service. In the 1940’s she volunteered to the Fort Roots Veterans Hospital as a “gray lady” and was honored in 1945 with the American Red Cross Volunteer Special Services Award. She started the first volunteer group at Scott Nursing Home and volunteered at CARTI and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She served on the Florence Crittenden Home board and Quachita Girl Scouts Council. She was a member of PEO Chapter C for over 50 years. She was a long standing member of the 20th Century Club and helped to start Hope Lodge, Departmental Club, Arkansas Arts Center, Fine Arts Club, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Society, FOCAL and the Old State House Assn. She and her husband were charter members of Riverdale County Club; now Pleasant Valley Country Club, and the Quapaw Quarter Assn. Roberta joined St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in 1955 and served on numerous committees to include President of Church Women Auxiliary, Chairman of the Annual Antique Show, Alter Guild, and the Columbarium, Trust, Diocesan, and Memorial Boards. She and Craig Chotard raised private funds and oversaw the design and installation of the stain glass windows in the sanctuary. Roberta Barnes was a unique, elegant individual. Her strength, wisdom, and empathy for others will continue to guide the many lives she touched. Funeral services will be Friday September 5, 2008 at 11:00a.m. at St Mark’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at a reception in St. Mark’s following the service.
