Biography: Donald Leroy Nilles, C.P.A., age 84, died on August 31, 2008. Born in Evanston, Illinois, on September 26, 1923, he was the son of Leroy M. Nilles and Beulah B. Nilles. Mr. Nilles moved to Arkansas in 1949 after graduating from Northwestern University School of Commerce with a B.S.B.A. degree. He was employed by E. L. Gaunt and Company C.P.A.s in 1951, became a partner in 1958 and a managing partner in 1975. He retired as a partner in 1988 and continued in a semi-retired capacity with the firm until 1995. He was a member of the Arkansas Society of CPAs and served as a member of its Board of Directors. He was also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Nilles was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he served as Treasurer for fifteen years, was a member of the Vestry and also served as Senior Warden. He also acted as Business Manager on a volunteer basis. He served the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas as its Treasurer for ten years and was named Episcopal Churchman of the Year in 1966 by the Episcopal Churchmen of Arkansas. Mr. Nilles was an avid duck hunter and served as President of Cooper Lake Hunting Club for many years. A Rotarian since 1958 in Club 99, he was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as Secretary, Treasurer and Director of the club. A veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater with the 8th Armored Division. He was active as a Troop Committee Chairman with the Quapaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and served as a volunteer with the United Way and other civic organizations. Mr. Nilles is survived by Mary Anne Nilles, his wife of sixty years, and three children; Edward Nilles and his wife, Gere, of Kansas City, MO, David Nilles of Little Rock, Carol Nilles of Little Rock; grandchildren; Andrew Birmingham (Haley) and Matt Nilles (Beth); great-grandchildren; Harrison Birmingham and Hadley Birmingham; and a sister, Mary Jean Thomas of Port Ludlow, WA. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1001 N. Mississippi Ave. in Little Rock on Wednesday, September 3 at 11a.m. The Rev. Danny Schieffler will officiate. EdBo, Gerre and family,

We are so sincerely sorry to learn of Mr. Nilles passing. He was a remarkable man and, although I know he had been quite ill for some time, he was a man of strength. We think of you often and especially at this time, you are all in our hearts and our prayers are with you.
