Biography: Venie Barton Flaherty, of Little Rock , passed away July 2, 2008. She was born at Hamburg, Arkansas to the late Cephas Conley and Mary Akin Barton. She was one of nine siblings. Venie grew up in Parkdale, Arkansas where she attended and graduated from Parkdale High School. She further studied and graduated from the University of Monticello, Arkansas. While attending a summer session at Henderson State in Arkadelphia, she met and married Reo Flaherty. After graduation they both taught at Ashdown, Crossett, and Little Rock Schools. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Pennington, five brothers, Arthur, John, Edward, Cephas, Jack and Barton, two sisters, Agnes Ogles and Mary Cornwell. Venie is survived by her husband, Reo Flaherty, sister, Pauline “Polly” Johnson, son in law, John Pennington, three grandchildren, Amanda Pradas, Andrew Pennington, Aaron Pennington, one great grandson, Beau Prada. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Janice Menzy, Judy Hearne, Charlene Martin, Suzanne Cornwell, and Darrell, Charles and Tommy Barton. Until Venie’s illness she was active in St. Paul United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, took and active part in Me Third, and in the Women of the Church Organization. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, tea parties and fishing and making sure to be properly dressed for each occasion. The family would like to thank the staff of and all her caregivers for the care they gave her in the four years she was at Presbyterian Village. The family will be at the home of her sister, at 812 North Arthur, in Little Rock. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham. Burial will be Monday at 10:00 AM at Pinecrest Memorial Park, a memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Paul United Methodist Church . Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty were two of the finest teachers I've ever had. Mrs. Flaherty taught me English at Crossett High School. Mr. Flaherty was my Geometry and Algebra teacher. I have such fond memories of two sweet and kind teachers. I was in the CHS class of '64. I am sorry for your loss in the death of your wife, mother, and grandmother.

I will always remember Aunt Venie as a very kind and proper lady who always tried to do right by everybody and everything and to do it with a great sense of humor and sense of style!

I am thinking of you at this time. Aunt Venie was a very kind and gracious person. I always enjoyed visiting with her. I have alot of good memories. Uncle Reo and family I am remembering you in pray.
