Biography: Robert Dwain Ross, 75, of Little Rock, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008. Ross was the principal in the law firm Pope, Ross PLC. Born December 3, 1932, in Hope, AR, Ross was the son of the late Alma and Raymond Ross. He graduated from Hope High School, Southern State College in Magnolia, and the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville. Between college and law school he served with the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Ross clerked with Arkansas Supreme Court Justices Frank Holt and Neil Bohlinger before joining the Pope firm in 1963. In 1975 the firm's legal secretaries successfully nominated him Boss of the Year. Ross served the Arkansas Bar Association as secretary/treasurer, as chair of the executive committee, and as a tenured member of its House of Delegates. In 1994 he received the Presidents Award for this work on the Arkansas Judicial Nominations Committee. He was an Arkansas Bar Foundation Fellow. He chaired the committee on Professional Ethics and Grievance for the Pulaski County Bar, and frequently provided legal services to those in need through VOCALS. Recently he has served on Bar committees addressing handbooks, technology and website oversight. He was a past president of the boards of the Quapaw Quarter Association and the Centers for Youth and Families and served tenures on the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Ross was selected from a field of nine candidates to serve as executive director of the 1979 Arkansas State Constitutional Convention. Ross is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances Roots Mitchell Ross and their children: Mitchell Ross and his wife Kelly; Ginny Ross Deuschle and her husband John; Mary Starr Ross and her fiancé Wade Brock; and by six grandchildren: Courtney and Mitch Ross, and Starr, Lila, Hollis and Blakeslee Deuschle, all of Little Rock. A nephew, Larry Ross and his mother, Floy, of Houston, TX. After the burial, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 17th and Spring Streets, officiated by the Rev. Canon Ewing Rhea Jackson. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Centers for Youth and Families and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

I wish I could have come to the funeral. I am saddened by the loss of my great uncle. All of my too few memories are of how gentle he was, a model for us all. I am not suprised by the multiple preceding messages that say the same thing. To aunt Frances, Mitchell, Ginny, and Mary Starr, my condolences and deepest sympathies from my family. Our prayers are with you. Wade

Mary Starr, I was saddened when both Katie and Libby called me this morning to tell me of your father's untimely death, which surely was a shock to all of you. Fortunately, grief lessens as loss turns to memory. In the meantime, may it comfort you and your family even a little to know that you are in my prayers. With sincere sympathy, Dale

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Frances, Mitchell, Ginny, Mary Starr and the extended family. Bob was not only a law partner for many years but a friend as well. As a lawyer, even with different views, Bob was the most understanding, calm, cool rational person with whom I have ever dealt. His kind, soft-spoken manner will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John and I feel truly blessed because he was a part of our life.

Mary Starr, I am sorry for your family's loss. He will gone from you, but you will have the good memories of him all your life. My dad died many years ago, but I think of him and remember things he did and said almost every day.

In deepest sympathy!

I served with him on the board of Elizabeth Mitchell Children's Center during the years when the funding was being gathered to build the new Center buildings on W. 12th Street during the Richard Hill years. He was a very wise, kind and considerate man. I always enjoyed talking with him the few times that we met at a local Kroger super market where we both shopped. I shall miss him.

Robert, was one of the most thoughtful, gentle, and considerate people I have ever known. He has always been helpful in guiding our fire department in a wide range of legal and financial matters. We, too, will miss him greatly and the community has lost a very good human being.
