Biography: Leonie Barrett Courtney, 77, of Little Rock and Fredericksburg, VA , died May 22, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredricksburg, VA. Ms. Courtney was born in Portland, Oregon the only child of Mary Raymond Barrett and Leo Francis Barrett. Raised in New York City, she graduated from Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, NJ in 1948. She became a medical secretary after high school. She loved to travel and toured Europe following a trans-Atlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth II. She lived in Fort Lauderdale, FL and San Francisco, CA before marrying R. Conrad Courtney, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1968 and settling in Crystal City, VA. After Mr. Courtney’s death, she moved to Fredericksburg where she was a long-time volunteer at Mary Washington Hospital touching many lives with her kindness and genuine interest in the well being of others. An avid opera fan and voracious reader, Ms. Courtney also loved her garden and home. In her latter years she led a quiet life still filled with concern for others. Those close to her will perhaps remember her best for her quiet, thoughtful and caring nature, and the elegant clarity of her thought and expression. She is survived by three stepchildren, Lawrence W. Courtney of Charleston, S.C., Catherine O. Courtney and J. Steven Courtney, both of Little Rock, Arkansas. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 12, 2008 at Roselawn Memorial Park followed by a Memorial Service at Christ Episcopal Church. Family members will welcome the Virginia friends of Ms. Courtney to her Falmouth home at 2191 Sebastian Rd. on June 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. to share their memories. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation in her name to the Mary Washington Hospital Oncology Resource Center. 1001 Sam Perry Blvd. Fredericksburg, VA.
