Biography: Donna Barkan Jensen, age 46, of Little Rock, died on June 2, 2008 following a long illness. Donna was born in Atlanta, GA, where she attended Lovett High School. She earned an MBA from Georgia State University and a Masters of Counseling from the University of Missouri. She worked at Burrell Mental Health Services (AR), was a volunteer First Responder, and was the Director of Mental Health Services, Springfield, MO. She is survived by her husband, George Jensen, Little Rock; sons, Jay Jensen, Little Rock, and Jeffrey Jensen, TN; parents, Mae and Leonard Barkan, Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Andy and Cheryl Barkan, Atlanta; niece and nephew, Alex and Amanda Barkan, Atlanta; and uncle, Jim Edwards, Springfield, MO. Graveside services will be held today, June 4 at 11:00 AM at Arlington Cemetery (Atlanta). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 1:00 PM at Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Avenue South, 17th Floor, NY, NY 10016. George, please accept my deepest sympathy at this difficult time. I know your wife's loss is felt throughout your extended family and circle of friends. Wishing you comfort at this time of mourning.

Jay, I'm very sorry for your mother's death. After getting the news, I found myself reflecting on music by composers (Brahms' "A German Requiem" and Mozart's sonata in A minor, K. 310, the slow movement) that they crafted while mourning the loss of their mothers, in different centuries. Mozart was also a young man, 22, when his mother died.

Eventually there will be a time of healing remembrance with softer edges. I know it is very hard now, though. Your mother was a blessing to everyone who knew her, and I hope there is comfort for you all in knowing that.

There is obviously no-good time or way for someone for whom we care about to pass away, and I am deeply saddened to hear about Donna.
On the blessedly few occasions when I have written to convey my condolences, I am always at a loss for words. However, I think back to the times I have lost those close to me and how I wanted to somehow tell everyone I knew about my loss, not in search of sympathy, but to inform people of all the wonderful things and joy that that person brought into my life. I look forward to hearing these stories…
