Biography: Abraham Alan Shindler, age 90, of Little Rock, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008. He was born March 19, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the son of the late Hyman and Rose Dodek Shindler. Alan graduated from Central High School, Philadelphia, the oldest high school in the United States. He also attended Temple University, Philadelphia and Tulane University, New Orleans. In 1942 he joined the Coast Guard stationed in New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. After the war he moved by to New Orleans working a Sales Executive with Brown Forman Distillers Corp. from 1950 to 1958 and from 1959-1969; transferred as State Manager in Little Rock for Brown Forman, retiring in 1984 at age 66. Alan was a founding member and past president of the Crescent City Coin Club, and was a collector of commemorative coins and large 1 cent coins (pre-1860) and US 1 cent “Indian Head” pennies (1860-1909). He infused his four children with the coin collecting bug and attended Coin Club meetings with his children. An amateur expert on humor among Jewish people, in retirement, he became an active member of Toastmasters, rising to the highest level of recognition of Toastmasters. He also remained active in his membership with the Little Rock Lions Club, and up until his death, was a proud and active member of Temple B’Nai Israel. Alan loved deep sea fishing, in which he participated for many years with his three sons and his son-in-law, as well as lake fishing of all kinds. In his later years, he was an avid watcher of all fishing shows on television and took enormous pride in Arkansas’ history of conservation and preservation of its wildlife and fisheries stock. He also delighted in the Murry Lock and Dam over the Arkansas River, taking every visitor to Little Rock to a tour of he dam. In fact, during the recent celebration of his 90th birthday his children told his grandchildren of a “dam tour” on the itinerary (as a joke), and several of them signed up for the excursion. Most importantly, Alan was a loyal and loving family man, speaking to one and all of his love of family and his children and grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Until the very end of his life, his one great love was his wife, Isolene, with whom he shared everything and whom he respected for all she brought to him and their children and descendents. Alan is survived by his wife of 60 plus years, Isolene Levy Shindler of Little Rock, 3 sons; Donald A. Shindler and wife Laura of Glencoe, Illinois, Michael C. Shindler and wife Andrea of Chicago, Illinois, David H. Shindler and wife Julie of Little Rock, 1 daughter; Lesley Shindler Hughes and husband Stephen of Chicago, Illinois, 1 sister; Anita S. Mittelman and husband Al of Philadelphia, PA. 1 brother; Joseph Shindler and wife Judy of Philadelphia, PA. and is pre-deceased by a brother Irving Shindler and a sister Pearl S. Constantine. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Jay, Adam B., Carey D., Lindsey Rose, and Alexander G. Shindler, Daniel J., Allison, and Jessica Hughes, and Susan S. Bockard and husband Cliff, and 2 great-grandchildren; Hayden H. and Wyatt W. Bockard. There will be a memorial service Sunday at 11am at the Temple B’nai Israel officiated by Rabbi Eugene Levy. Services are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Temple B’Nai Israel Endowment Fund, 3700 Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock, Arkansas 72212.

Dear Family:

I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Alan's death. I have so many great memories of him from my childhood - so jolly and kindhearted. I don't think I spent time with him that he didn't have a joke for me. Living to age 90 is definately considered a victorius life!

When I spoke to Aunt Nina, she shared some lovely stories of their life together. May your memories of Uncle Alan give you some solace and peace.

My love and prayers are with you all - Aunt Nina and all my cousins.

Love,
Ed Carson
