Biography: Gary Keith Burris, died on Saturday, March 29, 2008. He was born on April 16, 1940, in Russellville, AR, to Earl and Lois Burris, both now deceased. Gary is survived by his wife, S. Kaay Burris of Little Rock. His siblings are a brother, Jack (Dorothy) of Russellville; three sisters—Earlene Webb of Russellville; Anna Rylee (Dee) of Rogers; and Linda McBride (Bob) of Fayetteville. His children are Bert Burris (Melissa) of Roland; Rebecca Leigh Burris and Sherry Beth Thompson (Victor), both of Jonesborough, TN; and Jennifer Ware of Memphis, TN. His grandchildren are Merry Thompson, Emma Thompson, and Milly Thompson of Jonesborough, TN, and Hailey Burris, David Burris, and Hardin Burris of Roland. The family also includes many nieces and nephews. Gary Burris graduated from Arkansas Tech University with a degree in accounting and began his accounting career with Peat Marwick (KPMG International) in Little Rock and Houston. From 1973-2000 he was a partner in the accounting firm Rasco, Burris and Winter, and later founded and owned Burris & Company, Accountants and Consultants, P.A. He loved his work and especially enjoyed civic and church activities. A member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, he loved the Fathomers Sunday School Class and Noah’s of Ark Walk to Emmaus. Gary and Kaay worked in many Walks in the last 10 years and Gary served as Lay Director of Walk 129 in 2007. Deeply dedicated to his community and involved in volunteer activity, Gary was chairman of the board of LifeQuest of Arkansas; board member of Museum of Discovery; president of Central Arkansas Executives Association; chair of Pulaski County Council on Aging; chair of Visiting Nurses Association; and chairman of Elderly Housing Board, among many other civic contributions. Gary was very active in the accounting profession and held numerous offices in his professional organizations. As a member of the American Institute of CPAs and Arkansas Society of CPAs, he served the Society on the Board of Directors and as Vice President and President of the Central Arkansas Chapter; as Chairman of the Peer Review Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Meetings Committee, and Continuing Professional Education Committee; and as member of the Committees of Membership and Legislation. Gary also served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Accountants. In 1997, he was awarded the ASCPA Public Service Award. Gary was well known for his quick mind, keen sense of humor (which he often turned on himself), and warm personality. He loved his family and especially enjoyed two longstanding, annual Burris family gatherings, the Summer Retreat and Winter Holiday Retreat, where it was a rule that if you missed a retreat, everyone would talk about you. The family extends deep appreciation to Gary’s excellent medical team, led by Dr. John Ransom and the nurses and staff of the CVICU at Baptist Medical Center. They gave loving care to Gary and Kaay throughout his illness. Funeral services on Tuesday, April 1, at 2:00 p.m., will be led by Rev.Victor H. Nixon at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock. Ruebel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock, AR 72205; Noah’s of Ark Walk to Emmaus, 589 Meeks Loop, Hot Springs, AR 71913; or LifeQuest of Arkansas, P.O. I am with sad heart and mind. Gary was special. More than once he restored my faith in humanity and pulled me through some tough times -- both financially and personally. Now I feel like a ship without it's captain. However Gary left me with a magnificient mainsail and jib and a strong rudder that can steer me through the worst of life's storms. My head is hung low but my heart is full of memories. Thank-you Gary.

What a blessing Uncle Gary was in our lives. As family, we tend to take for granted the wit, faith and strength of a person - it's just who Gary was and who the Burris' are. How often have we said we need to record our stories. Now with the passing of Gary, I realize the gift that we have been given of a strong family that is filled with outstanding folks doesn't last forever - but our memories will never die. To Kaay, Jennifer, Bert, Becky and Beth, we are all here for you. What an outstaning tribute to Gary last week. From the service to the support of many friends. We are all better if we can learn from the gifts Uncle Gary has shown us. What a blessing he has been to us all. It just doesn't seem possible!!

Gary and I played on the school grounds through 6th grade, athletics in Jr.& Sr. High, sat next to each other in all Accounting classes at Ark. Tech--rabbit & squirrel hunting, all night penny ante poker parties. We were part of a group of about 7 friends who hunted, fished, and, those poker parties. What fun we had. He was one of my two best friends in Russellville and my best friend in those college Accounting classes.(He was brilliant--actually) There were three brilliant students in Accounting and I was not one of them. But when the professor announced that the highest two scores on the next scheduled exam would have their pictures taken with IRS representatives in Little Rock,I made up my mind to be one of those two. Gary was the highest and I was second. I still have that picture of us as shown in the Arkansas Democrat. That young man inspired me--he was a true leader. Even back in Jr. High, he was the starting quarterback and I was his back-up. Never thought a thing about it because he was the leader--and, more important, my friend. Growing up, we also both attended First Methodist and countless times met at MYF and played ping pong for hours. He was even the best at that. The years tend to separate, and one of the regrets in my life is that somehow we did not manage to maintain more frequent contact through the years. Reading his accomplished resume' in the years following college, I am not at all surprised. He was truly a leader and will remain so forever in my mind.

I was blessed to serve on an Emmaus walk with Gary and truly was inspired by his talk. The time we shared at practice and at the walk left me knowing what a true Christ loving man Gary was. He will be missed by many that knew him and it was a blessing for me to be in his presence. I am praying God's grip of grace and mercy will surround all his loved one's.

You will probably not remember me, but in 1999, my husband Blake died. At that time, we were members of Saint James and across the street neighbors of Sandy and David Spivey. I will never forget the help Gary gave to my son and I as we put Blake's affairs in order. He came to the house and sat with us at the kitchen table to answer any questions we had and to offer any advice that we asked for. I am so sorry for your loss and will remember you in my thoughts and prayers.

The following statement from Gary's obituary sums up very well his persona as I knew him "Gary was well known for his quick mind, keen sense of humor (which he often turned on himself), and warm personality."
I can't add anything to that except my respect and admiration for a fine person and a good friend even though we didn't see each other often. He was my client for several years, but most important he was my friend from the day I first met him.

Our love and prayers to the family.

Gary was one of a group of "whiz kids" that were hired by PMM soon after they acquired the Ralco accounting firm. I was assigned the task of bring them up to par on preparation of federal and state income taxes. They were quick learners and I enjoyed the opportunity to work with them. All that group went on to achieve successful careers.

Uncle Gary,

Sent me this email after he read my testamony.

"For someone like me who has been rode hard and put up wet, it gets hard for me to believe, and I am sure difficult for you, but it is said God will never put on us more than what we can handle."

No matter what ever happened he knew God was there.

I will miss our talks and he took me on my first duck hunt. I was looking forward for him to take my son Jake on his. You know thats why we should live everyday as our last and have no regrets.
