Helen Thomas Leigh

Sep 18th, 1932 - Feb 6th, 2026

Biography:

Helen Thomas Leigh was born on September 18, 1932, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to Marie and Harry Thomas, she passed away peacefully at the age of 93.

Helen moved to Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 19, where she built a life rooted in education, service, and community. She married James Gilbert Leigh, who preceded her in death in 1980.

A lifelong learner, Helen earned her degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and later received her master’s degree from Arizona State University. She devoted 24 years to teaching business education, believing deeply that education was one of the most powerful tools for lifting people out of poverty.

Beyond her formal teaching career, Helen dedicated many years to helping adults learn to read. After retiring, she generously volunteered countless hours at the public library and was herself an avid reader who never lost her love of learning.

Helen was a passionate supporter of numerous Arkansas charities serving those in need, as well as arts and cultural organizations, including the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the McArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. She was also a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral for many years.

Helen leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, and a commitment to lifting others through knowledge and kindness. Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

Helen was a great supporter of the museum, beginning in 2011, and was a strong advocate of educational programming. Over the years she funded exhibits, the conservation of World War I posters, a field trip grant program, as well as educational equipment. An annual contribution in honor of her husband, Lt. Col. Gilbert Leigh, ensured the museum's front lawn always looked great. Helen will be greatly missed, but we will continue to see the results of her generosity throughout the museum and remember her kindness and friendship.

Helen was one of the most intelligent, creative, fashionably- chic and well read people I have ever known! She loved to teach language and reading. She was a cross word fiend. She could get along with anyone in any fellowship. Tommy and I have been so fortunate to call her our very close friend. Susan K SCHALLHORN
