Biography:
At the age of 91, Dr. Evelyn Harberg left Memphis for her next place on January 28, 2026.
She was a trailblazer who graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1956 and took good care of her patients in Brinkley, AR for over thirty years.

Shaped by the Great Depression and the rations of World War II, she always kept a stockpile of coffee and a few good pairs of shoes. She splurged on pocketbooks, cars, and Hershey’s chocolate bars.  She enjoyed teaching her mother how to drive a new Thunderbird.   Evelyn strived to be self-reliant; and cars were freedom.

Evelyn was predeceased by Russian immigrant parents, Sarah Lipshitz and Hyman Harberg, who taught her that education was as essential as oxygen.  Evelyn is survived by the music of her heart: daughter Sarah Levy (David) of Brownsville, TN and the crescendo of that music, grandson Jacob Hart Levy of Memphis, whom she taught the importance of determination.

Graveside service will be at 2:30 February 4th at Oakland Cemetery in Little Rock, AR.

Memorials may be made to American Association of University Women, PO Box 98045, Washington DC 20090.

Sarah, I might be one of the few in Little Rock who remember your grandparents, Sarah & Dr. Hy! And your mom.
What a remarkable family who surrounded you with their pride and love.
Sam died almost 3 years ago, but I am still here. As a young couple, we were so welcomed by your grandparents. Your mother was not here as much since she was working on her practice in Brinkley, but we so admired her independent spirit and abilities.
I send my condolences and say, may her memory always be for blessing.

Sarah,
I remember you and your mother inviting me over for dinner when we were in law school and spending a lovely evening with her. I am so sorry for your loss. May her memory be a blessing.
