Beyond medicine, Dr. Thomas was an active parishioner and Vestry member at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and served on many cultural and civic boards, including the Arkansas Arts Center, the Greater Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, the Community Theater of Little Rock, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the Arkansas Opera Theater, the Visiting Nurses Association, the Historic Arkansas Museum Foundation, KLRE Public Radio, and the Chamber Music Society of Little Rock.

He appreciated a good round of golf at The Country Club of Little Rock, duck hunting at Cross Pond Duck Club with dear friends, his time in The XV Club, playing his collection of saxophones and guitars, driving fast cars, and traveling the world with Marti and his family, including reaching the goal of visiting each of the U.S. Presidential libraries.

Chuck and I send our condolences to Marti and to all of the family. Henry will be missed by so many. He was an exceptional teacher and a gifted ophthalmologist. He was always so kind, and it was a privilege to be a friend as well as a student of his.

Dr. Thomas made a difference in so many lives. I know he will be remembered with fondness by his family, patients and colleagues. We at UT Southwestern Medical Center are sharing in your sadness as we remember Dr. Thomas. His service as a U.S. Army Surgeon in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross is a remarkable testament to his courage, dedication, and selflessness, and we are deeply honored to count him among our alumni. We wish you and your family peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your heart.

Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there are a trail of beautiful memories. May those treasured memories be of comfort to your family during this very difficult time.

Through the years my thoughts have often drifted to thinking about this kind, compassionate, intelligent mentor and attending physician I had in my ophthalmology residency. Dr. Thomas had a nice way with staff, patients of all ages, and other doctors. He always had time to help anyone no matter how busy he was. I never once saw him get upset. He was always pleasant. I’m grateful that I was trained by him and will keep him in my heart. Sincerely, Kellye McElroy Smith
