Biography:

On October 27, 2025, Billy Roy Wilson died outright. He was the son of Roy and Vada Bowen Wilson. He was born in December of 1939 at the old St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock and was raised in Forester and Waldron. He attended the University of Arkansas and Hendrix College where he graduated in 1962. He graduated from Vanderbilt School of Law in 1965. He was a prosecutor in Texarkana, and served in the U.S. Navy for three years, five months, 22 days and five hours. He was honorably discharged in November of 1969.

Billy Roy practiced law at Wright Lindsey Jennings, then McMath, Leatherman, & Woods, and then with Wilson, Engstrom, Corum, Dudley, & Coulter until 1993 when he became the first U.S. District Judge nominated by President Clinton.

He enjoyed an eclectic group of friends that included people from all walks of life. He took great pleasure in these friendships, some of which lasted a lifetime of 85 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxanne Wilson, his brother, Dick Wilson, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Cathi Compton, with whom he spent 28 joyful years. He is also survived by Jo Luck and their children, Beth Gray (Paul) and Mark Wilson (Vy). He is also survived by his stepson Marcus Vowell and stepdaughters, Maggie Benson (Matthew) and Whitley Hobbs (Sean). He had a beautiful, blended family with many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The youngest of these, Mary Helen, commanded much of his attention and he spent the last four and half years doting on her and doing as she asked.

There will be a memorial service at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock on November 8 at 1:00 p.m. At Billy Roy’s direction, it will be a secular humanist ceremony, with a tinge of old times Methodism, and a convivial reception will follow the service.

Memorials may be made to Hendrix College, a favorite charity, or by forgiving a lowly sinner. Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

When I first started practicing Civil Law, I associated Bill on 4 cases. It was a thrill and a joy to be taught about law and practice by him. My office is now in his old law firm on Third street. We had him come over and swear in my son-in-law for Federal Court. I spent enough time with him to know he was a man of faith. I valued his friendship and highly respect him. I regularly think of him and i regret I did not go see him before he passed. I was out of town working on a case or I would have been at the November 8th service. He will be missed. He left a big hole in our justice system. It will be practically impossible to fill.

Cathi, Barbara and I are in Japan and very sad to miss Judge Wilson’s funeral. We are there in spirit. He was a wonderful man who made this world a much brighter and more interesting place. I know you will miss him terribly. Our condolences. (And what a wonderful photo. That's like Steve McQueen cool. Maybe there is still time for me to learn to look that cool.)

Dear Cathi and family. I was so saddened to hear of Bill's passing (to me long know as "Wills" and to him I was long know as "Thompkins."). He will be sorely missed. Bill was one of my longtime best friends and we enjoyed many good times together, especially on our driving trip with our sons to Alaska in the 60's which took us three weeks to make and several pheasant hunts in South Dakota. Bill and I also had several law suits together and against each other while he was practicing with the Wright firm. I loved that guy. I am so sorry that I will be unable to attend his funeral. Rest in peace dear friend.

Dear Cathi and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of your loss of Judge Wilson. I had the honor and privilege of serving in Judge Wilson's Courtroom numerous times over the course of my career as a U.S. Marshal. We all enjoyed his court sessions as they were so laid back and we were pretty much guaranteed a display of his wit and humor from the bench. The world is certainly going to be a lesser place without him in it. I pray for God's blessings on you all during this difficult time and the days to come.

Sincerely,
Senior Deputy U.S. Marshal Mike Koberlein (Ret.)

Judge Wilson and I are Navy veterans who served in Vietnam and that became a special bond. With our good friends, Jerry Roberts and Bill Matthews, we made memorable trips together. Bill’s knowledge of military history made for great conversations. Last year Judge and I made a trip to Tennessee for a mule auction; it was a great experience to see Judge reunited with old friends from the mule community. I’ll miss our friendship. Rest in peace,

My life as a trial lawyer is largely because of you. I had the honor of attending the Bill Wilson School for Trial lawyers. But you taught me so much more. You taught me humility in greatness, strength in gentleness, and focus in the midst of battle. I thank God I had the opportunity to touch the hem of your garment. My heart is overjoyed with joy and sorry, and it is so hard to carry both. I’m thankful I had the privilege to share your last moments with you. Find us a couple of gaited mules and if God allows me in, we’ll ride together again. Into Gods hands we commend your spirit.

Bill was one of a kind. We got to spend time with him through our close friendship with Bill's law partner Steve Engstrom. His stories were classic Arkansas hill country, of mules and courtroom shenanigans and political intrigues. And those stories were always told with a twinkle in his eye with his distinctive voice. He was, of course, an outstanding judge and lawyer and a wonderful man. RIP.

For the last 17 or so years, it has been an honor to serve with you Judge Wilson. I know you were always the jury's favorite with your way of putting things. " I believe we're walking on already plowed ground"! and the way you explained what that meant to the NYC attorneys in a trial. you will be missed and I hope you are in the glory of God, golden streets, wonderful drinks, mules, and old friends.

Cathi, when I first met Bill I still lived in El Dorado. You guys were still dating and I was in the backseat of what I guess was his car, with him driving and you in the passenger seat. I had been around him enough to be astounded by his extensive vocabulary. Of course, with my usual curiosity and a little bit of envy, I had to ask, “Bill, how the ??? did you become such a dictionary?”. His response (not verbatim), “when I was 12 or 13 I decided I would learn a word (sometimes 3) a day and use the word(s) in conversations until I understood their meaning”.
Who does that? Bill Wilson does. Funny the things I remember about people I admire. Bill was one I admired right away and understood why you loved and admired him enough to spend the better part of your life with such an interesting gentle man.
His big presence will be missed, but definitely not forgotten.

Love you so much Compthy Cathton! Terry

Will miss seeing and visiting with Bill, he was like no other. One of the few men I’ve met that knew where he was, where he had been, and where he wanted to be. You certainly have to admire honesty and integrity when you find it in a man. God speed Billy Roy, I assume your riding into heaven on a mule!

He defined what it is to be a southern gentleman judge. He was loved by so many and will be especially missed.
