Biography:
John Paul Whiteside, 81, passed away on July 2, 2025 after a brief illness in Little Rock, Arkansas. A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, John studied at University of Oklahoma and graduated with a degree in Politcial Science from Arkansas Tech University in 1967.
John began selling residential Real Estate in the early 1970s for Rector Phillips Morse in Little Rock and became a top salesman. In 1981, he moved with his family to Dallas, TX to work for the Lakewood branch of Merrill Lynch Realty in East Dallas. In 1983 he founded his own company, Whiteside Associates, which specialized in the Lakewood neighborhood. John hired many of his Lakewood neighbors as sales associates and through hard work, luck and lots of John’s signature humor, the company quickly grew to become the largest individually owned real estate company in Dallas. He was a long standing member of the Lakewood Country Club and spent lots of hours swimming and playing tennis with friends and colleagues.
In 1997, Whiteside Associates was acquired by Coldwell Banker. In 2014, John was recruited by Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty, where he became a Senior Vice President. In 2017 John retired to Little Rock to be closer to his brother, Charles B Whiteside III and son, John S. Whiteside. He was an avid outdoorsman that encompassed 20 plus years of father’s day float trips with Lakewood kids and dads, trips to the White River for trout fishing, the Buffalo and Crooked Creek for smallmouth, quail hunting in West Texas, and duck hunting at his beloved Pin Oak Duck Club. He was a master of a P.S. Olt duck call, cooking a hamburger steak with onions and insisted that french fries are best eaten with mustard. The drummer for his band in high school, Johnny shared his passion for music, especially Blues Music, to anyone who would listen.
He is survived by his girlfriend of ten years, Toni Popp, his daughter, Cindy Whiteside (Rob) Hammerquist and son, John Satterfield Whiteside and two grandchildren, Thomas Whiteside Hammerquist and Alice Poppy Hammerquist, his brother Charles B. (Cappy) Whiteside III and his niece, Carrie Whiteside (Mark) Smalling and his grandniece, Caitlyn Brandom and grand nephew, Charlie Brandom. He will be sorely missed by his dog, Levon.
A memorial service is planned for a later date. Please visit John P. Whiteside’s Facebook page to share your remembrances and photos.
