Biography: Robert Clair Jakway aged 77 died December 22, 2007, at Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock as the result of mantle cell lymphoma. Mr. Jakway was born 1930 in Benton Harbor, Michigan the son of Iva Clair Jakway and Mary Gertrude Nylander Jakway. After spending his childhood in Arkansas, Robert lived the majority of his life in New Orleans and worked for 46 years in the printing operations of the New Orleans Times Picayune. A life long learner and an avid reader of a wide variety of literature, Robert, who had to drop out of High School to support his family, eventually earned his GED, and even went on to earn an Associate in Science Degree in Motor Vehicle Technology from Delgado Community College in New Orleans at 53 years of age by attending night classes, one course at a time. He was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in New Orleans were he served as usher greeting young and old with a smile and a pat on the back. Robert and his wife of 51 years, Shirley, left New Orleans after their Lakeview home was lost in the flooding following Hurricane Katrina. The Jakways quickly made Little Rock their new home and became members of Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church. Robert is survived by his wife, children: Allen Lee of Germany and Julie Claire of Michigan, and three grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2008, at Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church.
