Biography:

Richard (Dick) Charles Newberg passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Born in Detroit, MI, Dick grew up in Ludington, MI, and graduated from Ludington High School. He spent five summers as the tennis pro at Epworth Heights, a resort on the beaches of Lake Michigan.

He attended Kalamazoo College for a year, as a member of the tennis team (defeated then top ranked Notre Dame) and well as the freshmen basketball team before transferring to the University of Mississippi, where was the first tennis player awarded an athletic scholarship.

Upon graduating with a degree in accounting, Dick accepted a job in Little Rock, and later earned his CPA designation. Eventually, he opened his own private practice. Working out from home, Dick often joked that his “boss had a lenient inclimate weather policy,” which was he is way of saying he was going to play tennis.

Dick was a member of the Little Rock Racquet Club for many years, serving on the Board of Directors. As much as he loved the game of tennis, he enjoyed, equally as much, “quality time” with friends, at the bar overlooking the courts, over a glass of wine.
Another passion of Dick’s was fly fishing. He was a member of a local group, now known as the Arkansas Fly Fishers. In 1977, he played an instrumental role in stocking the Little Red River with brown trout. He cast his line in many rivers around the country and into Canada.

The fish tales and stories of his athletic accomplishments escalated in 2009, as Dick’s high school basketball team was inducted into the Mason County (MI) Sports Hall of Fame. His “legend” grew in 2018; his tennis team, was inducted into the Kalamazoo College Sports Hall of Fame.

Nothing meant more to Dick than family. He became a published author in 2023, with a book about his grandfather’s heroic act in the stormy waters of Lake Michigan. But being blessed by becoming a grandfather, was his greatest accomplishment. He loved following the different interests of each of the grandkids. Whether it was bass fishing, art, soccer, or basketball, he enjoyed watching and encouraging each of them.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Helen See and Charles Fredrick Newberg, and one brother Ronald Lee Newberg.

He is survived by Sandy, his wife of 47 years; and two children, Andy (Miguel) Newberg and Juli (Tracy) Chrisman, four grandchildren, Paden, Katherine, Cameron, and Elizabeth, all of Little Rock; and one brother, Mitch (Debbie) Newberg, from Ludington, MI.

The memorial service will be at 1:00 pm Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Second Presbyterian Church-Outreach Program, Home for the Healing, or Scottish Rite for Children’s Legacy Scholarship Program, 2222 Welborn Street Dallas, TX 75219.
