Biography: Bob L. Jones, 93, of Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Midland, Texas, died Saturday, August 17, 2024. Born on his grandfather’s farm near Malden, Missouri on May 4, 1931, he was the son of William Lamar Jones and Thelma Phelps Jones.
In high school he was an outstanding athlete, becoming an All-South fullback for the Pine Bluff (Arkansas) Zebras, earning the nickname of Steamroller for his prowess on the field. A graduate of Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello), he later earned his Masters of Business Administration at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and became a Certified Public Accountant. He received the Distinguished Graduate Award from UAM in 1998. During the Korean War, he served the U. S. Army as a combat engineer, earning the rank of First Lieutenant.
His business career included working as a staff accountant for Texaco, practicing public accounting with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company in both their Dallas and Midland offices, serving as controller of the Ashley, Drew & Northern Railroad and Tri-State Mill Supply Company, both headquartered in Crossett, Arkansas, and as Controller and later Executive Vice-President of Midland National Bank, later First City National Bank in Midland, Texas. After retiring from banking, he served many years as Executive Director of the Fasken Foundation, also headquartered at Midland, Texas.
In Midland, where he lived for 48 years, he was very active in civic and community affairs. A long-time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and Midland Country Club, he was a member of Rotary Club, Exchange Club, and the United Way. At various times, he served on the board of directors of Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra, Young Life, Midland Memorial Hospital and Midland Memorial Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, the former Virginia Britt of Snow Lake, Arkansas, whom he married on December 12, 1952, a son, J. Michael Jones (Patti) of Little Rock, formerly of Dumas, Arkansas, a daughter, Leigh Anne Jones Conduff of Cartersville, Georgia, five granddaughters Anne Jones Williams (Drew), Katherine Britt Jones, Lexie Conduff Feltman (Gregory), Meredith Conduff Garrison (Todd), and Caitlin Conduff Sharpe (Harrison) and six great-grandchildren.
