Biography: Joan Rule Campbell, died Wednesday Morning, December 12, 2007 after a long illness. She was born in Little Rock on April 2, 1935. As a child Joan attended Camp Waldemar in Hunt, Texas, later becoming a counselor and retaining many friendships from that time. After graduating from Little Rock High School where she was cheerleader and an exemplary student, she attended Wellesley College, where she received her degree in economics. She returned to Little Rock and worked for the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce before winning a Rotary Fellowship. She studied at the University of Birmingham, England. She returned to Little Rock with a strong commitment to making a positive contribution to civic affairs and education. She was a member of the Little Rock Women’s Emergency Committee To Open Our Schools during the integration crisis of 1957 – 58, and she later became a very active member of the Panel of American Women which continued to work for racial and religious tolerance in our community. She also served on the boards of Volunteers In Public Schools, Youth Home, Planned Parenthood and Ballet Arkansas. Her wide range of interests included, gardening and she was an active member of the Little Rock Garden Club. In addition, she was a member of the Junior League of Little Rock from which she resigned in protest of their of exclusive membership qualifications at the time. For thirty years, Joan worked to inspire young High School students to realize their full potential by continuing their education. In particular, she recruited promising young women to attend Wellesley College her alma matter. In recognition for her work, she became a member of Wellesley’s Alumni Board. She was a committed Democrat and worked to elect many candidates, including her brother’s campaign for the Arkansas State Legislature and Little Rock School Board. In addition she was a member of the Aesthetic Club and Women’s Foundation of Arkansas. She swam laps at the Country Club of Little Rock. Joan and her dear husband George were avid world travelers, and had many exotic and marvelous adventures together and with close friends. Most recently they traveled to Libya and Tunisia. Joan was the daughter of Herbert C. Rule Jr., and Dora Stafford Rule. Her marriage to Robert Chowning ended in divorce. She is survived by her husband George E. Campbell, her daughter, Martha Chowning Groff of Los Angeles, CA, son, Marks Chowning of Baltimore, Maryland, step-daughters, Diane Campbell of Little Rock, and Carole Campbell Mange, of St. Louis. In addition she leaves her devoted brothers, Herb Rule and James B. Rule and seven grandchildren.
