Biography: MARIE WARD JONES, 89, of Little Rock, died Friday. The daughter of Marion Taylor Ward and Maggie Richardson Ward, she was born near Blevins, Arkansas, on August 3, 1918. She was predeceased by her brothers Homer and John Cecil Ward and her sister Marion Ethel Ward Shackelford. Surviving her are her son William Bryan Jones Jr. of Little Rock, her grandsons William Broadwell Jones and Stephen Ward Jones of Little Rock, and various cousins, nieces and nephews. She was valedictorian of her 1936 graduating class at Blevins High School and later in life maintained a 4.0 average in UALR English and Psychology courses. During the Second World War, she was employed by the Department of Agriculture; she worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1975 to 1995. Since 1946, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, where she served as an elder and on the governing Session. For many years she was active in Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Marie Jones was a vivacious, independent, strong-willed woman who loved family and treasured the ties of kinship. She enjoyed plays, concerts, lectures and travel. Last year she attended a literary conference at Saranac Lake, N.Y. She made friends easily with people from as far away as Scotland and Italy. Her spirited nature was evident even in recent years. On her 82nd birthday, Marie went horseback riding at Lake Tahoe and calmly reined in her horse when it bolted up a hillside. On her 84th birthday, she rode the rapids on the St. Lawrence River near Montreal. An avid reader, she recently finished the final Harry Potter book, "trying," as she said, "to keep up with my grandsons." Visitation will be at Ruebel Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:30 PM. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Little Rock, at noon on Monday, November 12, officiated by Rev. Howard Gordon. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Marlbrook Cemetery in Hempstead County, with a gathering for family and friends afterward. Arrangements under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies or the Visiting Nurse Association of Arkansas.

Bill, as you know I just learned of Marie's death. When I called I was attempting to set up a visit with this lovely lady. How very sad to lose her, but as I sit here I am smiling remembering her positive attitude and her quest to get the most out of life. I was blessed to be loved by this wonderful woman. I wish you the best as you deal with your grief, she loved you and your sons so much. Jan Wright

Bill and Family, Wishing you comfort. Others are thinking of you in this time of loss. We, who worked with her, appreciated the input Marie gave us on our correspondence, which was one of her strong suits. She will be missed by her friends.

Marie was a long-time friend and volunteer to the Visiting Nurse Assn. of Arkansas. Even into her 80's, she was willing to do what she could to help our organization serve those in need. We appreciate Marie's willingness to serve others and the family for remembering our organization.

I worked with Marie at HUD. When I was first hired at HUD Marie provided me training on several projects. She was a very good trainer and was very smart and a very elegant lady. Marie certainly will be missed.

I know my parents would join me if they could in sending our heart-felt condolences to Bill and the rest of the family, as well as friends, in this sorrowful time. For all those years of association at First Presbyterian (where my father and grandfather served as elders) to broader contacts across the city, I know that Mrs. Jones's life was rich, full of good fortune, and happy. A long life well lived is a fine thing.
