Biography: Jane Grigsby Arthurs, age 81, of Little Rock passed away June 25, 2023. She was born in Heber Springs, February 12, 1942, to the late Edward Grigsby, a farmer, and Irma Dean Olmstead Grigsby, a school teacher.

Survivors include Bill Arthurs, loving husband of 56 years; Martha Hinesley (Dean), sister; Deana Moody, niece; Stephen Bengel, cousin; Godson, Will Trice; the Bridge Girls; her Delta Zeta Sisters; a host of nieces and nephews; and her beloved housekeeper Rayleen Bishop.

The Grigsbys moved to Mountain View when Jane was a second grader, and Janice Hinkle Sutton (Kenneth) became her everlasting friend. Jane was valedictorian of Mountain View High School (1960) and went on to Arkansas State Teachers College (ASTC) where she was a spirited Delta Zeta and outstanding student. Graduating in three years, she became a distinguished teacher at Hall High School, teaching Business Education for 35 years. She earned an MA from the State College of Arkansas (later UCA) and subsequently won a prestigious Stephens Award for outstanding teaching in the Little Rock School District. Those years of teaching were a great joy for Jane. She loved teaching, and she loved Hall High. She is remembered fondly by scores of Arkansas students.

A “Dedicated Bear” at ASTC, Jane became a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and both the Doyne and President’s Society. She established with Bill the William H and Jane Grigsby Arthurs Scholarship for a deserving business education student. They created a similar scholarship at the UofA for a Sigma Chi student in any field.

In retirement Jane and Bill traveled extensively through Germany, Ireland, Scotland, and England--and along the Danube from Prague to Budapest. But their favorite destination was a coveted location off the coast of Maine where they returned time and again with Cousin Stephen and special friends.

Jane led an active social life mingled with community service. During twenty years she made significant contributions to Arkansas Children’s Hospital as a lifetime member and one-time President of the Children’s Auxiliary. She also volunteered in the hospital gift shop. She was an accomplished tennis player and a workout enthusiast at Pleasant Valley Country Club. And on the spiritual side of life, she was a “Cradle to Grave Methodist,” a 55-year member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and a cofounder of the Fathomers Sunday School Class.

The Bridge Girls and hosts of women considered Jane vital to their lasting friendships. She kept friends together, tracked their personal lives, and supported their children. Those who knew her best spoke lovingly: “very hospitable, always,” “the best friend a person could have,” “loved an adventure,” “always on your side and happy for your successes.” She asked amazing questions and “loved coconut pie and divinity.” Jane was one of a kind.

Bill and their extended network of friends offer eternal thanks to Barbara Ellis, Theresa Carmichael, Lachasity Marshall, and Arkansas Hospice for providing loving homecare during Jane’s final months.

The interment in the Columbarium of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2023. A celebration of Jane’s life will be held in the sanctuary at 11 a.m., followed by a church reception.

Contributions can be made to UCA Foundation, Inc., Arthurs Scholarship, 201 Donaghey Ave, Box 4986, Conway, AR 72035, or to Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in memory of Jane. Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

I am so sorry for the loss of Jane Arthurs. Thinking back to my years at Hall High, she is a real standout. I loved her bookkeeping and accounting class and actually still have the textbook. She encouraged me to join FBLA and I was elected President. Jane wanted an FBLA chapter at Mount St. Marys and she succeeded. We all just loved her. She was upbeat and fun as an instructor. I will miss her.

I had the pleasure of taking Mrs. Arthurs' business class at Hall High School (1979-80). And, I've always given her credit for setting me on the career path that I am on today. She was THAT teacher! One of my favorites! She was so thoughtful. If my name was ever mentioned, anywhere, you could be sure that I would hear from Mrs. Arthurs by phone, email, or letter. And, she would send me a clipping. I last saw her a few years ago at the funeral of a Hall High classmate. To me, she still looked the same...pretty smile, with a twinkle in her eyes! Rest In Love, Mrs. Arthurs. You will be missed.

I met Jane and Bill in the fall of 1969, delivering the “Arkansas Gazette” to their home on Evergreen Street. In 1974, when I was a senior at Hall High, Jane “encouraged” me to join FBLA and become involved in its fundraising campaign, selling bags of Texas Ruby Red grapefruits.
Jane and Bill were a lively, loving, fun couple. Jane was a wonderful teacher and person. She was forever active, engaged, interested and entertaining. She brought life to her community. With her enthusiasm and encouragement, she made you want to become involved.
Jane made a difference in many lives. She was ever young. Evergreen.

Mrs. Arthurs was my most favorite teacher at Hall. I always loved seeing her at some of my reunions. She was friends with my dad at PHUMC and I enjoyed getting to visit with her during those times. When my dad turned 90 she came to his birthday party. It was a fun time as there were several hall high friends that were there too. The last time I saw her was four years ago at McArthur Park for the Flag Day celebration. Mrs. Arthurs never aged. In my eyes she looked the same as she did in the late 1960’s, just as beautiful as ever. She will be remembered fondly.

Bill, I am saddened by the loss of your Jane. You two always seemed to be the best of friends. She cared for her students like they were her own children. I last saw her at my Mom's funeral 4 years ago and was so touched by her support. She was with Marilee which made it even more meaningful. I think of you two each time I drive by your old home on Evergreen. I will always remember her smile, her sparkly eyes, and her voice. She aged very little through the years. I pray you feel surrounded by love as you grieve your loss.

She was an excellent teacher. Always willing to help in anyway she could. Her smile would light up the classroom, always had a kind word for everyone. I got to reconnect with her when she was working as a volunteer at Arkansas Children's Hospital gift shop where I retired from. She was still the same wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers for her family during this difficult time. Mrs. Jane you will be missed.

Jane, Ms Arthurs , was my Home Room teacher at Hall High for 3 years. I absolutely loved her and later got to know Bill. I always saw them together everywhere I went.
In my senior year Ms Arthurs came to me to donate blood for a blood drive that Hall was sponsoring. The drive required that the donor student had to be 18. Not everyone student was 18 at the time of the drive so I was one of the students she came to. She enticed me to donate by letting me “skip” the last class of the day for the duration of my senior year. We had a really sweet relationship and I adored her the rest of her life.
Thank you for the great memories. I’ll miss you deeply

I had Jane for Accounting in the 12th grade. She was easily one of the best teachers I ever had. We would see each other through the years, mainly at my business. When my class would have a reunion, she was the only former teacher to attend multiple reunions.

Mr. Arthurs and Family,
So sorry for your loss, I had the honor of taking Mrs. Jane's Accounting class at Hall High
when I was a 16year old Junior in 1989, she absolutely always had a smile on her face.
One of my fondest memories was when I was running late to class just before the bell was going ring,
and slipping and falling in the hallway in front of her classroom doorway, she just nodded her head and smiled
She will be greatly missed.
