Biography: Virginia Welch Christie, age 84, of Little Rock died Sunday, November 4, surrounded by her family. She was born Virginia Ashburn Arnold on Sept. 26, 1923 to Clyde C. and Ila B Arnold of Little Rock who preceded her in death. She attended Rightsell Elementary, Little Rock High School, Little Rock Junior College and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, from which she graduated with honors in 1944 with a degree in journalism. Virginia was on the staff of the student newspaper, the Arkansas Traveler and, in her senior year, was the business manager for the college annual, the Razorback. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Phi Alpha Theta honorary society. In 1944, Virginia married her college sweetheart, Morgan E. Welch of Joplin, Missouri, who was then in the United States Army serving as a lieutenant. After residing at various Army bases during the remainder of World War II, Virginia and Morgan settled in Joplin, where they resided until Morgan’s death in 1962. During their lives together in Joplin, they owned a roofing and construction company. Virginia and Morgan had two children, Chip and Leslie, and were active in the First Methodist Church, various social and civic organizations and were founding members of Twin Hills Country Club. After her husband’s death, Virginia returned with her children to Little Rock to be near her parents. She completed additional college training in education and in 1964 began teaching English and sponsored the newspaper at Southwest Junior High School. In 1966, Virginia moved to Hall High School where she would teach journalism and sponsor the War Whoop newspaper and Warrior yearbook for the next 20 years. Her publications and (more importantly for Virginia) her students won numerous Arkansas High School Press Association awards. In 1967, she married Scott Thomas Christie, who was the then Assistant Superintendent of the North Little Rock Public Schools. Tom later was a consultant for Arkansas School Service. He passed away in 1971. Thereafter, Virginia raised her two children alone and put both through college and one through graduate school. Suffice it to say, her son and daughter loved their mother very much and will miss her terribly. Virginia was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, Chapter I of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Gilbert Marshall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalism society, as well as Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary education sorority. She is survived by her son Morgan E. “Chip” Welch and his wife Cheryl of North Little Rock; her daughter, Leslie Virginia Welch Taylor and her husband Tim of Little Rock; her granddaughters, Ashley Welch Hudson and her husband, Cliff; and Morgan Shelby Taylor and Jordan Virginia-Marie Taylor, all of Little Rock. Mrs. Christie is also survived by Cheryl’s son, Rick Martin, whom she loved as well. The family would like to thank the staff and management of Presbyterian Village and Arkansas Hospice for their compassionate care concerning Virginia’s last illness. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Ruebel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 9, at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Victor Nixon. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn, Little Rock, 72205, or the Presbyterian Village Foundation, 510 Brookside Drive, Little Rock, 72205. Funeral arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Chip, although it's mid February, I only this moment read about your mom's death on the Classmates website while I was reading about our 40th reunion. I have thought of her so many times over the years and have such wonderful memories of her. She really took me under her wing at Hall, and the three years I spent with her working on the War Whoop were wonderful, mainly due to the home she made for us all on the staff. I remember that I was the only student she let sneak away from school and attend her wedding! I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Chip and Leslie,

I was so sorry to learn of your mother's death. She and my mom, Marie Jones, were good friends. My mother often spoke fondly of her and frequently quoted her as the ultimate authority on this matter or that.

At the time of your mother's death, my mom was in the final stages of her own struggle, and I couldn't bear to bring her the sad news. She died a few days later, on Friday, November 9.

I greatly respected your mom. I know that she will be missed by family, friends, and the community at large. Please accept my sincere condolences.

What a difference Mrs. Christie made in the lives of those blessed enough to call her teacher, editor, and friend. Now that her struggle is finished, we can rejoice in her life as it touched each one of us that had the privilege to be taught by her and work with her on Hall High's yearbook and newspaper. She taught me how to sift through the details and focus on what is important, what can make a difference. She was a positive force in many lives, one that you never forget. Chip and Leslie, I extend my heartfelt sympathy for you in your loss. Your mother will always be remembered with love, appreciation and respect. She really did make a difference! Chip and Leslie, What an amazing Mother you had! I was blessed to be on her Warrior staff for two years. She was so proud of both of you, and spoke of you often. She taught me so much about journalism, but even more about how to respect others. She treated each and every student as if they were her own children. While that wore me out at times, going to great lengths to make sure that all names were spelled correctly and all pictures were of smiling students with their eyes open, I am so grateful for the lessons that taught me. I'll always remember her fondly. Julie Calhoun Font, Hall High Class of '76.

Dear Leslie, I'm so sorry that I cannot come to Virginia's services. I have therapy at that time. Virginia was one of the loveliest ladies I've ever met -- gracious, kind and loving. I thorughly enjoyed the brief time I worked with her in PEO. Your children were such a pride and joy for her. From my contact with you, you are very much like your mother, Leslie. You have been a very loving and caring daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Rosie

Leslie, Chip, and family,
How very sad that such a sweet lady with a marvelous sense of humor has left us. Mrs. Christie had the most calming, pleasant voice and was totally devoted to her family (and their friends!). What a treasure to have known her! Please know that we are thinking of you with love and wrapping ourselves in warm, happy memories of your precious mother and grandmother.

Dear Leslie and Tim,

I am very sorry for the loss of your Mother, a beautiful Southern Lady. It seems that the hardest thing about maturity is the loss of our loved ones that are older. You and Tim have had your share this year. Again, I am sorry.

You and your family will be in our prays.

Love,

Jimmy

I never had Ms. Christie as a teacher but my brother, Brent Franks did. As a friend of Leslie's Ms. Christie knew me and my siblings.
I have a packet of photo's from various sources that Ms. Christie gave me several years ago. There are photo's of my family and siblings that somehow got past me.
I know I was not the only person Virginia had a photo file on. I have often wondered how Virginia could be so loving, giving and supportive at all times to everyone. She was a gift to our family. All of our love to her family.

Mrs. Christie was my Journalism teacher in my Junior year of high school at Hall, and I was on the War Whoop staff during my Senior year. She was a great teacher and neat lady, and I remember so many funny things she said and stories she told. I learned very much from her and feel very lucky to have spent two years of my high school life in her classroom. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Chip & Leslie :

We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to you and your families. Your mother truly touched our family when Charla & her brother, Dave, attended Hall High. She was one of our favorite teachers, and the life lessons she taught have always remained with us.

We share in your loss and can empathize with your feelings as we lost our husband and father, Reid, just this past August. He and your mother were the same age. We know that you will miss her.

With love,
Emily and Charla Faulkner

Chip, Leslie and Family: Mike and I are so sorry for your loss. As a widow raising two children alone, your mother 'set the bar' for single mothers everywhere. Her life was a testimonial of love for her children and grandchildren, and when she became ill and could no longer care for her family, her family followed her good example and lovingly cared for her. You have honored your mother in the way you live, in the way you love, and in the lessons you have passed on to your children. She would be proud. You and your family are in our prayers.
Love, Mike and Mary

Chip:
I'm so very sad about your mom's passing. I loved reading about her full life with academics and raising a wonderful family. You were truly blessed to have such a wonderful role model. In my eyes, you are such a great man, have such a wonderful sister, and I know your mom was and is very proud. I know her through you and her happiness at Ashley's wedding. It is comforting to know she is at peace and I know you will be with her again. I will see you soon. God Bless you and your family.
