Biography: Ralph Marvin Cloar Jr., 85, was called to heaven on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. He was no doubt joyfully reunited with his beloved wife Katy and his daughter Mary Virginia.

A native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Ralph met his wife Katy in 1957, and they were married for 57 years until her passing in 2020. Together they raised three children and had five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ralph loved his family deeply, cherished his friendships, never met a stranger, and always opened his door to those in need.

Following a successful career as an accountant, he graduated from the old University of Arkansas Law School, Little Rock Division in 1974. Ralph became known as a leading trial lawyer, not only in Arkansas, but as counsel in national class actions and multi-district federal litigation. He served as the President of the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association for the 1986-87 term, and, at the national level, he served on the executive committee of the American Association of Justice. Although Ralph humbly described himself as a “street lawyer,” he was nationally recognized for his legal career. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Leonard Ring Champion of Justice Award from the American Association of Justice. Similarly, the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, and the Arkansas Bar Association recognized Ralph with the Outstanding Lawyer Award in 2018.

Upon his retirement, the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association announced that they had established the Ralph M. Cloar, Jr. Scholarship at the University of Arkansas School of Law.

Ralph grew up in Pine Bluff, the eldest of three boys. At Pine Bluff High School, he was a standout football player for the Zebras. He attended both the University of Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist University, as well as served in the U.S. Army. On a fall weekend, you could find him cheering on his Razorbacks or Tigers, as a proud season ticket holder. As a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he maintained friendships and kept in touch with his brothers throughout his adult life.

A lifelong Southern Baptist, Ralph had put his faith in Jesus Christ and his life exemplified his heart for furthering the gospel. He was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church where he taught a Sunday school class for many years. He mentored young professionals, volunteered with the underprivileged, and counseled generations of people struggling with substance abuse.

Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Katy Cloar, his daughter, Mary Virginia Struthers, his parents, Virginia and Ralph Cloar Sr., and brother, Tom Cloar. He is survived by his brother Bob Cloar (Mary Lynne); daughter, Lynn Cooper; son Ralph Cloar, III (Kay); grandchildren Jonathan Cloar (Sarah Beth), Julia Struthers, Haley Reilly (Luke), Mary Elise Cooper, and Henry Cloar; and great grandchildren, Connor Cloar and Emma Kate Cloar.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 10:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church (5700 Cantrell Road, Little Rock) with a visitation immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ralph M. Cloar, Jr. Scholarship fund at the University of Arkansas School of Law. Friends & Family --

I wrote on this page earlier, but since Ralph's death and especially since his memorial service yesterday, I have had him on my mind. It was so reassuring to read of Ralph's religious beliefs. It really is a marvelous thought that Ralph is in Heaven with his Savior, Jesus the Christ, plus reunited with his wife and daughter. It makes my heart smile thinking of their recent scene at the Golden Gates. I have a small plaque in my office that bears the following legend - worthy of sharing with everyone: 'Today, I will walk and grow in Faith, honor His promises, talk to God in prayer, live in peace and praise Him for my blessings.' May all who read these words know 'The Peace That Passeth All Understanding.'

I met Ralph 32 years ago, in the office of another lawyer I admire immensely. From that day forward, Ralph was a champion for me, a sounding board, and an inspiration by example and by some fatherly advice. But, more importantly, he was there for me on several ocassions when I needed something in my personal life. He cared, and he went out of his way to do what needed to be done to put that care into action, not just words. I'll never forget him.

Heaven is rejoicing today to welcome Ralph Cloar home. I will greatly miss him as long as I remain here on this earth. It is difficult to loose such a long time friend. Our friendship began when we roomed together at Ouachita in 1958 and continued throughout our lifetimes. Ralph loved Calvary Baptist Church, (the same church I was baptized in as a 7 year old boy) and his Lord Jesus Christ. Wish I could tell you about our theological discussions at 2:00 a.m. in those days. Congratulations Ralph, on a life well lived.

Ralph was one of the best trial lawyers one could ever want to know, not only for his skills but also for his courtesy, professionalism, and ethics. On top of that, he was just an all around wonderful person - truly a man of character. I admired him so much and I am honored to be able to claim him as a good friend for these many decades. He never will be forgotten and always will be missed. Prayers for his family he loved so much.

Ralph and I were friends since we were eight years old and I moved into his neighborhood. We have kept up with each other ever since. In recent years we spoke every two or three months. He was both interested in the world and interesting in his own right.
Ralph was the central person who kept ou high school class together. He was a wonderful, kind friend and I will miss him terribly.

To all who knew Ralph, admired and loved him --

My family and I are heartbroken to learn of the end of Ralph's life. He was a faithful friend for many years. I was greatly blessed to know him as a personal pal as well as a legal mentor. Ralph cared deeply about justice, for his clients, his friends as well as unwavering justice for all in Arkansas. During Ralph's career, he could hardly walk through the courthouse as he had so many friends, they all wanted to greet him and visit about trials, clients, politics, sports or making plans to share a meal with him. Ralph's death will be felt by me till the day I retire from the profession of being an attorney. I have no waver in declaring I loved Ralph - he was a wonderful friend and I will be ever grateful for his advice, for sharing fun times and much more. I am at a loss today, feeling like I should be contacting him about the death of a marvelous legal friend, but the friend is actually Ralph himself. I am filled with tears at the thought he is a memory. GOD bless Ralph.

Our hearts are broken. Ralph was a wonderful friend. To me, he was a mentor and ‘big brother’ since law school, 48 years ago. He’s with Katy and Mary Virginia now. As we grieve, they’re dancing in heaven!

God Bless!

Chip
