Biography: Zelma Jean Woods, 94 of Little Rock, AR passed away February 20, 2023, at her home after a hard fought battle with Cancer. Jean was born at home in Bauxite, Arkansas on August 5, 1928, to Lawrence and Marie Lynch. Jean grew up in Bauxite, a small town where everyone knew everyone but moved to Little Rock to graduate her senior year at Little Rock High School, (Central High).
Her first job was working in bookkeeping at Gus Blass and soon met a handsome Navy vet returning from WWII. Jean married James Woods in 1947. Jean and James quickly moved to Chicago for her new husband’s training in a technical school. That was a shock for a young girl from the small town of Bauxite to be living in the big city of Chicago. But survive they did with Jean working bookkeeping jobs and odd jobs at the boarding house where they lived.
They were eager to move back to Little Rock and they did building a modest home in the Oak Forest area. Jean and James became devoted members of the Oak Forest Methodist Church and attended until she could no longer make the trip. They were always the core of volunteers for any and all church projects and fund raisers. Jean later worked for the Little Rock School district in several roles at Franklin and Brady elementary schools where she retired. After retirement she traveled with James to many countries in Europe and the Caribbean where they always made friends.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband James Woods and parents.
She is survived by her children Elizabeth Billingsley, (John) and Bill Woods. Grand children Clayton Billingsley, (Chrissy) and Anthony Billingsley, (Christine). Great Grandchildren, Cache, Aiden, Cooper, and Corbin Billingsley. She is also survived by the best friend one could ever ask for Charlene Looney.
